School shootings from around 1984 (within 5 years): January 29, 1979 Armed with .22 rifle she had been given for Christmas, 17-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire at Cleveland Elementary School. She wounded eight children and one police officer and killed two adults. January 21, 1985 Armed with a M-1A Semi-Automatic Rifle and a .357 Pistol, 14 year old James Kearbey fatally shot his principal and wounded 3 other teachers and a student at Goddard Junior High School. May 20, 1988 30-year-old Laurie Dann walked into a second grade classroom at Hubbard Woods Elementary School carrying three pistols and began shooting children, killing eight-year-old Nicholas Corwin and wounding five others before fleeing. January 17, 1989 Patrick Edward Purdy, a disturbed drifter and former Stockton resident, opened fire on the Cleveland Elementary School playground with a Chinese-made semi-automatic rifle, similar to the AK-47, killing five children and wounding twenty-nine others and a teacher. The victims, Raphanar Or (9), Ran Chun (8), Sokhim An (6), Oeun Lim (8) and Thuy Tran (6), were all Cambodian immigrants, except for Tran who was born in Vietnam. [1] Since 1959, there has been a school shooting every few years. For the last decade it's been one or two a year on average, but coverage has increased, so it's possible that we're just more aware nowadays. The worst school massacre in US history happened in 1927 in Bath, Michigan. Andrew Kehoe, protesting taxes used for school construction, set off a series of bombs in the school, killing 45 and wounding 59 others. After the initial bombs were set off, he set off a second, suicide bomb to get the rescuers who had gathered. Not taking place in the debate, just giving a little information regarding school shootings. Do with it what you will. source: Wikipedia Gilda |
