They are both dead reliable. That being said, Remington makes the higher quality weapon. Of course you pay for it too.

One operational difference to consider is that the Mossberg probably has the sliding type safety on the upper rear of the receiver vs. the pushbutton safety on the trigger guard of the 870. The Marine Magnum version is less likely to corrode if mistreated but probably stands out more in the woods if you ever plan on hunting with it.
