router thinks IRC is SYN flood attack?

My router drops its connection with the computers on the network whenever I try to connect to IRC (any network). I suspect that the router is trying to defend itself from what it perceives to be a flood attack from all the info upon connection to an IRC server.+

This started recently, and unfortunately I do not know what caused it; I can't think of anything it coincided with. I have tried this from 3 different computers on the network, using different IRC clients. And router firmware is the most recent.

Any solution other than getting a new router?

Some more info:

mIRC says:
*** [10053] Software caused connection abort

My router (Dlink DI-624) log says:
Jan/14/2006 22:13:09 SYN Flood Attack Detect Packet Dropped
Jan/14/2006 22:13:07 SYN Flood Attack Detect Packet Dropped
Jan/14/2006 22:13:04 SYN Flood Attack Detect Packet Dropped

And Windows XP says:
"A network cable has been unplugged"

Then it takes about 10 seconds for the internet connection to restore itself.

DL have released some interesting firmware that's sensitive to some types of traffic, usually gaming or p2p. Have you already enabled "gaming mode" in the router?

I also have this issue; my router reboots shortly after connecting. It seems to happen when I'm getting port-scanned by IRC servers that scan for open proxies on connect, like Freenode and Foonetic. I have tried with "Gaming Mode" both enabled and disabled. I have the latest public firmware version (2.76) and my router is a DI-624 Rev. C (which seems to be the common link). I'm thinking I may have to get a new router, unfortunately, since this one is fairly old and I doubt D-Link will actually do anything now.

Sorry if you don't like people renewing old threads but I figured it was better than making a new one, and this seems to be the most specific post I've found about the issue.

+1. Your router is too far downstream to protect from a DoS attack anyway. If your router won't allow that then it may be time to consider a new one. I've never had any personal experience with a DI-624, but that sounds like some poor firmware to me.

Actually, bumping an old thread for a related issue is proper forum etiquette 'round these parts. Bumping old threads for random comments is less proper, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Yeah, the web interface is fairly basic, and there's no real way to customize the firewall. I liked the Linksys interface on my old one but alas, the routers seem to have gone downhill of late.
