sound problem
I recently purchased an Emachine, which is great for me except the sound. I did the microsoft win xp sound troubleshooting guide but it didnt help. Basically the issue is that there is a slight clicking sound that happens when I am listening to a song or playing a game. The sound is kinda like a cd skipping but not nearly as blunt as that. It happens through the main speakers and it happens if i try to listen through headphones plugged into the computer headphone jack. It happens in Itunes, playing a game, quicktime etc. So I dont think the problem is an idividual program. I checked some sound drivers like it said and they were fine (its a brand new computer so everything is up to date i think). Im not getting any errors popping up anywhere. Just this stupid little click sound. I figured I would ask you guys first before calling customer support. You guys are smarter.

Most probably an IRQ conflict somewhere. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware and click on the Device Manager button. Start by lookng for any exclamation marks, as they represent driver issues. If you don't see anything, you can check your sound card manually by finding it in the list (it'll be under the heading 'sound, video and game controllers'), right clicking on it and going to the properties. Got to the resources tab there and look at the bottom. If it says 'no conflicts', then we need to look at another potential cause.
A possibility is also EMI. If you have a cordless phone or something generating radio noise, it could cause random noise in the speakers. This, unfortunately, is not easily fixable. I've seen people pick up AM radio on their computer speakers before. The system would be off and unplugged and you could still hear a radio station playing faintly through the speakers. It's rare, but it happens.

thanks for the replies fellas, unfortunatley nothing seems to work. As far as more details. The sound happens using Itunes, WMP, realplayer etc. It happens when playing an MP3 or a CD. The sound still happens when im playing a game. It doesnt seem to have anything to do with the mouse/keyboard or any external actions. The speakers are not picking up cell phone frequency or radio frequency when they are on. None of the drivers are showing any problems. Windows update has nothing new to update. The sound is comes from headphones and speakers. It is just a light clicking noise that seems to happen at random. It might happen a couple times in 10 seconds or it might happen only once every 15 seconds. Just seems to be random.
argh.
