Gaming LCD recommendations

I've been looking into the LCD market for some time now, but found it difficult to give up my good ol' CRT. Well, that CRT is on it's last leg these days, and I want to get an LCD.

I've been looking at verious 19" models. I'm considering the Dell 1905FP, but not sure yet. Anandtech says it is pretty good for gaming, and I've heard nothing but good things about it. Also considering a Viewsonic VX924 or the oh so popular Hyundai L90D+.

What I need:
DVI support - This is a must for me for color accuracy. And one that includes the DVI cable would be nice.

Decent response time - The Dell has a 20ms, which if the not for the Anandtech review, I wouldn't even consider. From what I've heard though, alot of these companies make their own claims on response time as there is no industry standard, and that many are simply unreliable based on various factors.

At or preferably below $400 (rebates are cool though )

Needs to be somewhat adjustable (tilt, swivel, height, etc.)

I too have heard great things about the dell. I wouldnt have thought to turn to them, but they do resell some nice screens.

One thing that I want to get is the 2405. In every way, this is the most amazing screen ever made. Apparantly even better at gaming than the 1905. It costs an insane amount, but you do get a BETTER than native HDTV resolution, and many goodies....

But you are right about the refresh rates. There are no standards as to how they are measured, ar at least, none that are accurate and widely used. You have to go by the reviews.

I am still using a 19" trinitron, and I am ready to say goodbye. More than ready.

I use a Dell 2005FPW. Got it for about 400 after rebates from techbargains.com. I love it. It fulfills your requirements and I can vouch for how cool it is.

I'm using a Viewsonic VX922. It's very pretty. It handles digital (cable included) and it cost me just about $400 at newegg. As for adjustability, it tilts, but you cannot raise or lower it, and swivel is pretty much "moving the base." I'm very pleased with it.

I dunno if I would care for widescreen though. I don't know how it would work for games and all... I have a BFG GeForrce 6800 GT OC, so the card could handle it. I just worry about how games like WoW, UT2k4, Quake 4, and RtCW would work in that resolution. My roommate in my dorm has one, but he runs games and Windows at 800x600 on his. Yeah, it makes me cry on the inside too.

800x600! Wow. You should beat him over the head and take it from him.

Many(most?) games support the 1680x1050 resolution these days. At least, they should. I know Battlefield 2 doesn't, and that's mainly because the guys at EA are asinine. Regardless, BF2 looks fine on my monitor. If it really is a problem, I think there's a non widescreen version of the monitor. Anyhow, the quality is exceptional and your 6800 would love it. Don't you want to give your 6800 some love?

I to am looking!

am i reading this right on this Viewsonic VX922, 2ms response time? that is friggin insane.... I'll post my request on here too then.
I'm looking for a gaming LCD also.

19" or greater
Widescreen would be awesome but not a requirement
Greater than 1280x1024 resolution
MUST have DVI
12ms Response time or lower
and of course, higher contrast ratio is preferred.

Any suggestions?

Response times are very subjective. There's not really a standardized way of measuring, so many companies will pad their stats and report a really low response time.

Like I said, it's really hard to go wrong with the Dell 2005FPW.

i read some reviews of that and people say that the backlight on it will wash out the colors on dark games / graphics....

It does have the potential to make darker areas lighter, which I've noticed when working with images. However, I've noticed that my CRT was too dark and that I got better contrast in the dark range of colors on my LCD. Let me look for some pictures that I noticed were especially problematic.

One that has really caught my attention is the Samsung SyncMaster 930BF. DVI capable, comes with DVI cable. 4 ms response time, 19 inches, and rings in at ~$470.00 CAD (hence it should be below 400 USD).

Where are you seeing at $470 CAD? $999 on their website. http://www.samsung.com/au/products/m.../tft/930bf.asp

Another vote for the Dell. I have the 2005FPW and it rocks for gaming. I've seen it for $343 via techbargains...

One of the problems is that you're looking at Samsung's Australian website. Rule of thumb for electronics: the further from the USA you are, the more expensive they are.

That's where I've seen it so far.

Well, after much debate and taking many things into consideration (price, performance, and availibility since the CRT was actually dead the day after I posted my last response), I opted for the Viewsonic VX924. All I can say is... WOW! Bright and vivd, no ghosting in World of Warcraft (I PvP some on my rogue), Quake 4, or UT2k4. I had to turn down the stock brightness (100%), but doing so did not affect the contrast or performance.

The given response time is probably BS, but I have no complaints. As long as I can play WoW and Q4, I'm happy. And going to this from a 15" viewable KDS CRT with a max resolution of 1024x768 is skeet-tastic.

Since we're talking about LCD's: I have dual Sony 17" and I would love to replace them with this:

I just wish I could afford the card and the monitor

That and two 7800 GTX OC SLI so you can run Quake 4 at the insane resolution that damn thing must have. Good googly moogly. What in the blueberry hell would one need with a monitor that big? Still... can't wait to see performance benchmarks on it
