erm, i wouldn't recommend it.

it's doable, but
1. you'd need to install/set up a server (webserver such as apache for http, or ftp for ftp)
2. you'd need a shitload of upload bandwidth

... i'd say, if you want to share a few random things privately then an ftp server's your best bet.

other than that, no, you prolly shouldn't go there

It depends on what you are trying to serve
For web pages a web host is best
what kind of pipeline do you have?
I ran a FTP server for a while
If you make it public....It will get hacked.
Give more details
and we will be able to come up with a soultion.

For a page you may be better off useing a web host
It's more reliable and many ISP's block port 80
for a free host ripway is excellant
http://www.ripway.com/
They have a good pay plan too
You could go the full route
and register your domain with godaddy
their hosting starts at less than $4.00 a month

If your ISP is not blocking port 80
and you still want to run a page
apache is the server best for free
http://www.apache.org/
It's tricky to set up, but very stable

another you may like is at
http://www.pablosoftwaresolutions.com/
I like their FTP server
never used the web server

You can get a free redirect to your IP adress at
http://www.no-ip.com/
if you need it
my old cable company had static IP's
my new has dynamic IP's

Nice, free and open source web server with a simple graphical console for those uninterested in editing weird configuration files.

Get a free redirect at http://www.dynip.com/. This will allow you to an address like aquafox.dynip.com you could give to people as your HTTP or FTP server address.

alpha phi - why do you make such a claim that an FTP server will get hacked if made public? I've had mine online for about 10 years now (hosted at home and on a major backbone) without any incidents. Yes the FTP protocol passes passwords back and forth in plaintext, but I hate to scare someone away from doing something like that nonetheless. There are a myriad of ways one could use to restrict access to those only AquaFox trusts.

http://support.jgaa.com/index.php

contains a free to use FTP server that has a graphical interface for you to configure it, for those who do not wish to edit configuration files by hand. Very thorough, secure and lots of help available.

There is a huge difference between public and restricted access
Anyone with a kiddie script can crack FTP with public uploads allowed
