Web-based databases?

It seems all I do anymore is ask for help...

I've got a new project at work and I need some advice. The library has come into possession of some historical pictures and a couple of relatively important documents.

Let me preface this to say I know next to nothing about all this. If anything, I'm more of a hardware guy, I guess. So, bear with me.

I've done some quick research on this, but to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what I need to do what we want to do. We'd like to make this stuff available via our little section of the school's website (a la virtual server). A searchable web-based database that those interested can use to access our archive from anywhere they see fit.

My boss asked us for recommendations and I thought who better to ask? Likely the administration of such will be handled in house (like our online catalog) as they're reluctant to involve Computer Services. So, the simpler the better.

Any help appreciated and thanks in advance.

For a small number of items it may
be easier to create an index page
with each item listed in alphabetic order.
Viewers could scroll thru or use
the browsers find funtion.

A larger data base could be done
with an onsite search engine

Some of the software can be expensive

There are a few free web based engines

I wonder how the search works here on TFP?
Might be a good thing to look into

I'm using MySql on a PHP server backend for my databases. It's all virtual hosted.

TFP uses something along similar lines but on it's own hardware.
