For a while I have wanted to have a web page, with pictures and a journal.

I was thinking about using a blog/image service but I may want more than that, like genuine server and bandwidth, hosting my own page, whatever I want it to be.

But I've long ago stopped caring to program a good site from scratch. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any suggestions to software to display images and such. A template more or less. I have no problem doing gimp work and designing something interesting, but I want to be able to plug it into something functional, as opposed to having a boring HTML 1.0 page that looks like its from 1995. Thank you...

You might go check out OSWD (www.oswd.org). Or, if you're looking for something a bit more powerful, you might check out a Content Management System (CMS) like Mambo/Joomla, etc. You can find many of those at www.cmsmatrix.org.
