Cycling lock-up, ticking noise...

First of all let me say that I've done a token search of this thread and analysed my poor old laptop to bits with Hijackthis, Adaware and some other tools mentioned on here, as well as ones that I already had installed. As far as I know, I have a nice clean, spyware-free computer.
(SP2 installed, Firefox as standard, Norton for antivirus, McAffee for firewall, 1 GB of RAM, 1.9 GHz processor, various spyware/adware tools)

There's nothing on there that I don't recognise. I've run several defragments, I've purged everything that I can think of, I've disabled the Indexing service and run both chkdisk and Norton's own flavour of it. yet...

I defragmented my system overnight as I usually do. I came back this morning, rebooted, and then I heard the Noise Of Doom coming from my hard drive.

Tick tick tick tick
Tick tick tick

Tick tick tick tick
tick tick tick

(Sometimes repeated)

(Sometimes accompanied by disk activity, after the last cycle)

Accompanying this is an almost complete lock-up of the system every time this process (whatever it is) starts. Games grind to a halt. Firefox stalls. Explorer hangs. After the ticking stops, whatever was supposed to happen in the interval happens very fast.
There's no accompanying cpu spike or pagefile activity jump. The pagefile is set to the system-allocated size - no changes there.

As I've said before, this happened after my last defragment. I've tried re-defragging various times throughout the day putting various files first. No joy. My system restore tools don't have a save point for a time before the defrag.

I'm pulling my hair out here. Any help, suggestions, or pointing out some basic newbish error that I might have made would be greatly appreciated.

HijackThis log appended for form's sake - I can't see anything here that I haven't OK'd and/or recognised

Sounds more like a hardware issue.
Hard drive failure?
If I were you, I'd back up anything important. ASAP

you could try a complete format....
at least that way.. no regrets
on a hasty hard drive purchase.

Crazy

I had a similar problem with a 'tscht' sound. Ends up it was due to the drive overheating -- the onboard fans were not spinning up enough or until the temp became too high.

I downloaded the program Speedfan which literally saved my hard drive. I ran the program and cranked all the fans in the laptop to 100% and soon the clicking was gone.

Now fans at 100% all the time both are noisy and drain the battery so the next thing to do is look up the specifications for your CPU in terms of operating temperature range and then program that into Speedfan. Voila! The fans will kick in at the temp you specify to maintain the target range. It is an awesome little program.

I'd also recommend NOT defragmenting or running scandisk over and over since that's just going to cause your hard drives to heat up more and more and die faster.

Sounds like the drive may be on it's way out.. data errors that require the drive flush its onboard cache, thus leading to the ticking noise.
