So whats do you guys think of the new firefox?
Finally firefox's new version of its browser has come out. The new version promises to be faster and more user friendly than before. It now allows you the ability to delete your private information (IE:history, cach, cookies) all in one button. So far a lot of my extensions have been updated with it but you still have to check around to see if they are compatible with the new version.
If you need more info and a link to it, here is the link to the site. www.getfirefox.com

I'm running it - and have been running the 1.5 betas/release candidates for a while now.
The main problem I have with it is that the window's titlebar and the URL box don't properly update when changing between tabs. This doesn't happen all of the time, but it happens a lot on forum sites (TFP, Shacknews, etc.) it seems, but it's often enough that it's annoying as fuck. I'm not running any theme (I was, but thought that may have been contributing, so I disabled it - didn't help), and I have this problem on Linux and Windows (FF 1.5 RC1, RC2, RC3/Final). Has anyone else run across this problem - and if so, have they solved it?

I tried to upgrade to 1.5, but most of the extensions I use aren't available for it yet, so I went back to 1.0.7. From what I used of it, 1.5 seemed a little faster, and also had some more options that may be usefull. I'll definatly be upgrading as soon as the extentions I want are available for this version.

Pragma, I've seen that but haven't looked into it. It's never shown up on a couple boxes that were clean 1.5RC installs. Could be chance or my eyesight but I'm suspicious of installing over old versions or perhaps old extension cruft.

I am still running 1.0.7 and will continue to do so until the 100s of extensions that I use will be updated.
Anyway, it's a good deal for Mozilla.

Been using 1.5 RC's for a long while now, and loved them all.
Its had a few problems here and there, but RC3 & Final are quite bug free. I mention both of them since the two are so similar I've yet to notice a difference.

I LOVE being able to re-order tabs. I've wanted that since tabbed browsing first appeared in Firefox.
It's going to be just a matter of days until every current plugin is updated to work with 1.5. I can live without adblock for that long. |

If you use a Macintosh, this version is CRITICAL. Way way way better than 1.0 was. If you use a 3 button mouse, the middle button works properly now.
(I've been using the nightly versions for many months. Haven't jumped to the new nightlies yet, but probably within a month I'll be there.) If you want to force an un-upgraded extenion to install, you can use the extension Nightly Tester Tools. Of course, some extensions won't work properly in 1.5, so you do this at your own risk. Also, many extensions are no longer needed, as they have been incorporated directly into Firefox. Pay special attention to any extensions that affect tab usage.

For the Linux folks, its a *huge* upgrade. Firefox 1.0x was incredibly slow on Linux, but one of the core objectives of 1.5 was to fix that--and fix it they did. It's unbelievably faster now.
Havent tried it on Windows yet, I don't boot that too often ![]()

1.5 almost seemed slower to me. I'd never run it on this machine, but it seemed to take longer to load the same webpages as IE. Now that the cache is catching up, I can see it evening out.. but I'll have to see if there's a difference on my home machine..

The re-ordering of tabs is a nice feature.
I have noticed that it has crashed on me a couple times since installing. And when I had 3 tabs open one time, the memory usage spiked to 200mb and 50% processor usage. I still think they need to work on the memory leak problems, in my opinion.

It launches much faster for me. I had one crash so far that was pretty severe, but I was going to a website that had some sketch content. Otherwise it's been smooth sailing.

For those of you having trouble running certain extension after the upgrade, you might want to look at the developer’s site. I found that most of the extensions haven't been updated. That would mean you would haven’t o download them from the developers site or look around the extension/theme pages on the mozilla website. I found that my theme wasn't compatible with the new version and found later that they had a new upgraded version at the theme section of firefox update page ready to download. It shouldn’t take long for the coders to upgrade all the extensions, until then, use the nightwish extension like Redlemon stated.

I can't for the life of me get the Wikipedia search add-in. I click on the add-in link and get a blank icon in the search box that then refuses to search. I'm about to try re-installing...

Furry - reinstalling the search plugin should do the trick, that's what worked for me.
the problem with the wikipedia is a common one, as shown in this post at the mozillazine forums

Here's two minor things about 1.5 that I think are way cool.
When you open a link in a new tab, the link isn't marked as followed until the connection actually goes through. This also works on other tabs, if they contain the same links. It can be a bit disconcerting at first. The error pages actually work. And they are pretty. When that hit the nightlies, I was typing pages incorrectly on purpose just to see the beautiful error page (for instance, try http://www.osidufa.com/).

Experiencing no problems what so ever. At the same time i haven't noticed too many of the changes but maybe that's a good thing. I will be happy once my theme is back up and running.

bene running the beta version for a while so the "upgrade" was nice to finally be on a stable release, but overall nothing that I am overly happy or sad about.
I did find this addon (thought I shouljd just plug it in this topic for all to see instead of making a new one) I am sure some of you have seen/use the IE view addon to open pages in IE that will not work in FF, well now someone has one that actually uses the IE engine to open a page in a FF tab ![]() http://ietab.mozdev.org/ IT WORKS LIKE A CHAMP so far, even on 1.5

Here's a kind of specialist question:
I've switched to Firefox (on my Mac, Opera still holds a grip on my PC). What I'm wanting to do is consolidate browsing, RSS, and possibly mail into one. Currently I use NetNewsWire for RSS and Safari for browsing. I've found the Sage plugin for Firefox, and like it alot, but here's a quick question: Anyone know how to make the items that I've already read disappear? This is a feature of NetNewsWire that I really like, and would hate to give up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

SessionSaver, I believe.
In other news, I nuked my ~/.mozilla/firefox directory as well as the firefox directory where the extracted pre-RC3/Final binaries were and reinstalled FF 1.5 for Linux and it seems like my window title issue is taken care of. I just need to do that for the Windows machine now, and I'll be all set.

I like it, haven't noticed much one way or ther other, except that my memory usage has gone up greatly. Firefox used to run around 50-80 megs of ram, lately I've been seeing it in the 300's not sure what is causing this, but i don't like the way it uses that much.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's crazy enough to be excited about the new error screens. I don't keep up with the nightlies, so when 1.5 final was released and I got my first 404 I was highly impressed.

I can't get embedded sounds (like, say on ytmnd) to work. It tells me to install the missing plugin (Quicktime) which I already have installed. When I follow the wizard it says it can't do it properly and takes me to the Apple website. Otherwise, I like it.
