Tilted World
I was visiting Member's Playground this afternoon, and checked out the TFP as Pleasantville thread. I was wondering if it is possible to create a TFP MMORPG, with some "free" program out there. does anyone have any ideas?

21 PEOPLE HAVE VIEWED AND NO ONE HAS A FUCKING COMMMENT?
|
Im not a programmer.....but, ....excellent concept....

Chillllll Winston. Programing is not a high traffic area, and many just browse through. This is the type of idea that very few in our commmunity could implament (SP?). Why don't you suggest this in that mentioned thread and see what response it gets? |
I tried that, but that thread is on it's fourth page and has pretty much reached saturation point now. I get that programming is not a high trraffic area, and I was thinking of taking this thread over to "Computers" and seeing what would happen.
When I first thought of it, I googled "free mmorpg" to see what I would get and got a link and download to a french site, where they offer a free browser based mmorpg, but from then on it gets technical, and while I can take a computer apart and re-assemble it with the best of them, the programming of it makes me say,"whoa". Maybe I'll troll this thread over in some other forums and see if there is any interest. |
TFP-ized, how? Do you mean that the characters are those of the board, or something further? Just having the TFP characters running around doesn't sound very fun, we'd just have a 3d chat room.. :)
|
Yea, I've got a lot of programming skills, but honestly -- would it be worth the effort? Probably not. We've already got an IRC chatroom where we can hang out and talk to a bunch of people.
What would the advantages of of a 3D chat room be? Well, uh, it could make Moe's a lot more interesting, but only if someone spent a massive amount of time programming character animations. And .. that's about the only real advantage I can think of. After all, it's not like people are going to look like themselves (or at least not for the most part). But we could walk around and ... and then limit ourselves to talking to a subset of people because we're too far away from everyone else? Just start a private channel on IRC and invite who you want. Then you can talk on that one - and the main channel. Don't get me wrong, it's a neat idea - but I just don't really see the advantages of this over IRC. Not to mention that we'd have to make it compatible for Mac OS, Windows, and Linux/BSD - otherwise people would be left out (and that would massively decrease usage). For instance, if I want to talk to JinnKai, but I know he's running a Windows machine, and I've got a FreeBSD machine, and yet the "Tilted World" client doesn't run on FreeBSD, then why would either of us use TW instead of IRC (which works for all platforms). |
Well, now that you put it that way, I guessI see you point. I've just been tooling around the EVE universe and was flush with the possiblities of it all.

I'm not aware of any free 3D MMORPG environments for the taking, but I've got a relatively unused MUD that could suffice for a meeting spot. I'm not sure what the capacity is, but I have seen it with over 20 players.

Graphical or non-graphical? I think a text based MMORPG or Multi-User dungeon might be more apropriate. Yes you can do it fairly easily. Check out LambdaMOO and the software that runs it.
|
I was thinking of graphical, but reading over some other people's posts and doing some more research I don't think it's too practical

It could totally be done in Java 1.4 using JOGL and FMOD (which would give you the multi-platform capability while still keeping excellent 3D graphics and sound), and if a project actually got started I'd gladly contribute as much coding time as I could.
However, as Pragma said, it's way too much work for a very little audience, with no pay initiative, and would likely be under-utilized even given the low-audience expectations. |
You could just have a group of Tilted Forum members who play Second Life. This MMORPG allows people to have (for lack of a better phrase) a "second life". Everyone could walk/fly around and still be able to chat. Create or buy other objects etc and interact with each other.
It was a great concept when I beta tested it, alas I don't know what it's like now. This is probably the closest you're going to get to a 3D chat room or RPG. The members here just don't have the time neccessary to create an entire world - do you have any idea how involved it is? I play EVE: The Second Genesis and from what I understand was in development for a few years before it was even in a beta-test phase. |
This isn't exactly what you were asking about, but check out http://www.nationstates.net .
Basically, you create your own country and have to manage it. We could create a TFP region and play amongst ourselves. I haven't signed up (a co-worker is a big enthusiast) but would if others are up for it. From the FAQ: Quote:

I've played Nation States before, but I don't remember much about it. Second Life looks interesting, though. that's sort of what I had in mind.
