are socket 370 and socket 7 compatible?

can an AMD K6-2/500 cpu (socket 7) run in a socket 370 (P6 SET-ML 201) motherboard (that came with a Celeron 333 processor (FV524Rx333)?

they look to have the same pin configuration.

will it cause more trouble than it's worth? will it die a fiery death?

In short: No, I'm afraid it won't run.

The pin config might physcially allow one chip to fit in a socket meant for another, but the mainboard is configured to run with either an Intel or AMD CPU in the driver's seat.

That's the non-technical answer.

I'm not sure offhand what would happen if you tried it anyway. If you do, please report back. I'd be interested.

Assuming the voltages for the chips are close, there might be no chip damge; but, I wouldn't swear to that right this second. Assuming nothing broke, I'm pretty sure you'd get a whole lot of "nothing happened...bummer" kind of reaction.

Socket 370 is about the same size as the Socket 7. There are two differences between socket 370 and socket 7 (both sockets and processors):

1. Socket 370 processors don't have 2 corner pins while Socket 7 processors don't have only one corner pin. The extra corner pin doesn't allow Socket 7 processors to fit into PGA370 socket.
2. There are 6 rows of pins between the edge and the center of the processor for Socket 370 processors, and 5 rows for Socket 7 processors.

There would likely be chip damage as the pinouts for power, ground and signaling are not the same, and therefore the mobo would likely try sending voltage across a signal pin and may try to ground out pins that should not be. It could also very easily damage the motherboard as the internal wiring of the chip may relay power (if one pin that carries power is, in fact, in the same spot) to unpowered lines on the chipset.

At any rate, no... if it's not designed for a specific socket type, don't put that chip in it. :-)

I figured that was the case, but felt it couldn't hurt to ask.
