The worst thing is, I still want a Nano

Glory's Sun 10-13-2005 05:27 AM

I still want a nano too. This is sexy to. I think I'll try to get both.. that way I can have the nano for the gym and this one for everything else.

They need to make the entire iPod a screen (2.5" is not enough space to watch video) :(

henlin 10-13-2005 09:24 AM

a bigger screen would be helpful but that still isn't going to stop me getting one:D. Anyway if I want something bigger I can always watch it on my PSP. What we need now is some way to connect them together!

Redlemon 10-13-2005 11:08 AM

It is still a kick-ass iPod, even if you don't use the video features. Also, the television shows on the video store is pretty major; I won't be using it (I have TiVo), but now the people who don't want to illegally bittorrent an episode of a show that they missed have a way to obtain it now, rather than waiting for a summer rerun or DVD release.

Cynthetiq 10-13-2005 11:17 AM

I only am interested in the video part and if I can somehow get my Tivo shows on the iPod with minimal conversion and hassle.

Sounds pretty easy: check out HOWTO Rip DVD Movies To Your iPod, linked from BoingBoing today.

Cynthetiq 10-13-2005 11:41 AM

it's not that hard... just a pain in the ass to do the conversion instead of just drag and drop ;)

fallsauce 10-17-2005 09:42 PM

I'm seriously thinking of getting this, (this or an iRiver H340).

Does anyone think there's a likely chance that someone could do a firmware and make it so that other formats like avi or wmv can play too?

I read about the audiobook bookmark feature on this one, is that featured in previous ipods, or just this one?

Gatorade Frost 10-17-2005 11:01 PM

I'm hoping for the 60 gig for Christmas, then I'll give my sister my 20 gig iPod since I have more music than I can fit on my 20 gig.

The best article I've seen so far regarding video on the iPod is from iLounge: iPod-Ready Videos?. It'll give you some idea of the conversions required.

Audio bookmarking goes back at least to the 3rd generation iPods.

this is where I'm lost as a consumer for these products....the conversion times... not copying times which are also pretty lengthy...

How Long Does Conversion Take?

We’ve run tests on different machines and with video files of numerous sizes, but generally, the answer ranges from “longer than you’d expect” to “unbelievably longer than you’d expect.” Here are some of the findings on a dual 2.0GHz Power Macintosh G5 computer - more powerful than the average Mac, and comparable to the mid-class Windows PCs being sold today.

Source: Full-Length Movie (MPEG-4), 625x352 23.98fps, AAC Stereo 48kHz, 1 hour 42 minutes duration.
Result: Full-Length Movie (H.264), 320x179 23.98fps, AAC Stereo 44.1kHz, conversion time: 10 hours, 11 minutes (approx. 6x realtime).

Source: iPod Introduction Video (Sorenson Video 3), 320x240 15fps, QDesign Music 2 22.05kHz stereo audio, 6 minutes 52 seconds duration
Result: iPod Introduction Video (H.264, 320x240 15fps, AAC 44.1kHz stereo audio, conversion time: 10 minutes (approx. 1.45x realtime).

Source: Tokyo Game Show Footage - RR6 (DIVX), 960x540 50fps, no audio, 1 minute 20 seconds duration.
Result: Tokyo Game Show Footage - RR6 (H.264), 320x180 46fps, no audio, conversion time: 11 minutes (approx. 8.25x realtime).

Source: Tokyo Game Show Footage - PDZ (DIVX), 960x540 25fps, no audio, 1 minute 6 seconds duration
Result: Tokyo Game Show Footage - PDZ (H.264), 320x180 25fps, no audio, conversion time: 3 minutes (approx. 2.73x realtime).

Source: Home Movie.mov (H.264), 320x240 29.97fps, AAC Mono 48kHz, 1 minute 4 seconds duration
Result: Home Movie.m4v (H.264), 320x240 29.97fps, AAC Stereo 44.1kHz, conversion time: 2 minutes (approx. 1.88x realtime).

What do these findings suggest? Even on a good computer, converting videos for iPod playback is nowhere near as fast as ripping your CDs into iPod-ready music files. Techies will say “duh,” but first-time video encoders need to realize that under most circumstances, conversion from most unprotected digital video files will take at least two times as long as the original running time of the video, and quite possibly substantially longer - 10 hours is not unusual for an under two-hour movie. Two factors - videos with high frame rates and/or long running times - are most likely to drag out your encoding process.

Note: We are not factoring in the additional time it may take to break the encryption of DVDs and copy their files to your computer. All of our tutorials going forward will assume that you are the complete rights holder for the DVDs you are ripping, having made them yourself with a program such as iDVD, and therefore have the right to break your own encryption. This process can add another hour or two to the full-length movie estimate above, depending on the speed of your DVD drive and other factors.

My 3rd Gen iPod is on its last legs so I'm planning on getting one of these guys when they finally make it into the Apple store. I reserved one on Sunday, so I hope I get in on the first shipment that comes to the store.

Revised answer: How-To: Get TV shows off of your TiVo and onto your iPod (with video) - Engadget - www.engadget.com.

In short:
1. DirectShow Dump to strip TiVo metadata.
2. VLC to convert to iPod Video.
3. Add to iTunes.

fallsauce 10-18-2005 11:51 AM

I know there's a 17min skip protection, but I also heard people say it's really bad to shake (etc) a hard drive player. Does this mean I can take it with me when running, (say... after a bus?) How much can it handle?

And I think I'll just get a normal iPod, maybe photo. Unless this is thinner or something. (The price is nearly the same. Really hoping for a Christmas special.) I guess I just liked the possibility of watching something on the road, I didn't consider whether I would actually go through all the hassle of converting my files.

I don't even have my TiVo networked, so I'm just grabbing links that I see. It appears that there might be a program called "TyConvert X" that does the same thing on a Mac, but I can't find it. It is probably available in the forum Extraction, Insertion, & Streaming Support - DealDatabase Forum - Deals, Freebies, and TiVo & DirecTivo Hacking, however...

I still use a 2nd gen 10GB iPod -- meaning that it's nearly 3 years old -- and have battered it (dropped multiple times from as high as 4 feet), run with it, and nearly drowned it (ocean = iPod not good...but my pocket kept it mostly dry). I would say that the newer models are probably even more reliable. In short, don't worry about running with any iPod, hard drive or not.

zensheep 10-21-2005 09:56 AM

So has anyone else picked one up? I got a 30gig White Video iPod on Tuesday from the Apple Store and so far I'm afraid to do anything with it until my invisible sheild comes in the mail. I've put some videos on it and they look great so far. Granted I haven't experimented with it much but I am impressed by the video quality. Some areas of sound quality have been boosted as well, and damn, it's really thin. I'm really enjoying it so far, and with my student discount and iPod recycling product I got it for $240 + tax.

I'm waiting for the Ubergeeks to figure out how hack 4G iPods to play video....

(i doubt it, too...but I can always hope....)

Check out Ipod Linux. They've already done it. Plus Linux on your iPod makes you a nerd. But a cool one at that.

I'm glad hardly anyone is bitching about the video-features. It's an iPod with Video. Not a iVideo with sound. Money says that late 2006/2007 they will sell a 5" screen'd iPod (probably touchscreen clickwheel).

Man, I really don't like that black. And I want the U2 back :(.

fallsauce 10-22-2005 02:17 PM

So I think I'm going to pick one up. I'm torn between the black and white though. Black is sleek and sexy, but it's probably going to look a lit odd with all the white add-ons (anyone know if the accessories that come with the player is black as well?). On the other hand, white is classic, but everyone's got a white one.

trickyy 10-22-2005 03:15 PM

i'm sick of having to hack every product because it is crippled when i buy it.
but they will do well with this regardless

I just got one of these and what pisses me off is that it doesn't come with a portable charger. Apple charges an extra 30 bucks. Bastards. And my laptop doesn't have USB 2.0 either. has anyone come up with a solution for charging on the go?

Well, it costs more than $30, but I'm interested in the iGo Everywhere charger; get different tips, and you can charge anything (except a laptop, which requires the iGo Juice).
