This should probably be moved to the Tilted Programming area.

Have you ever learned a programming language? If not, then Java isn't something you will want to try first. A high level, Object Oriented Programming (OOP) language like Java isn't easy to learn unless you dedicate a whole lot of time to it. You might try some scripting languages out first, like JavaScript or PHP to get down programming logic, and then maybe something like C++. Java structure is a lot like C++, so knowing it first may help.

Java is incredibly easy to learn if you understand the why of programming, programming is mostly about learning to write the music, the words follow from that. C++ is also interesting to learn and is probably more useful currently than Java (though Java is getting more usage its still not used for anything essential or game related really).

Learning Java, 3rd Edition. I've always been a fan of the O'Reilly "Learning ..." series, though I haven't used this one specifically. See if you can get it off Amazon or Bookpool for cheap.
