help, please.

what's a good wireless router? right now i have a linksys 802.11b router, but it sucks. everyone keeps saying linksys is good (or one of the best) for routers, so i'm just hoping that this router is for linksys what windows ME was for Microsoft and nothing more. i've looked online for another one, but honestly i don't know where to start in terms of quality...

i'm happy with my Motorola WR850G. Nice and fast, never had a problem with it.

I'm running a WRT54G and it works fine. Nice thing about it is if you don't like the firmware, you can replace it with OpenWRT or something else. I've not needed to do that however.

have also had good results with the (Linksys) WRT54g... you can even get add on antennas to boost the range o_O

I've only ever had luck with Linksys, and their stuff has been rock-solid. Maybe you've got a dud?

ok, so i'm on amazon.com lookin for a new router, when i came across this review of the router i'm using now. it pretty much sums up all the problems i'm having (note: the caps came with the review):

Quote:

THIS IS MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH THE WIRELESS ROUTER WORLD. WHAT A NIGHTMARE.
1. HAVE TO UNPLUG,THEN,REPLUG ROUTER,THEN REBOOT COMPUTER, EVERY 3 DAYS OR SO BECAUSE IT WON'T CONNECT.
2. CONNECTIVITY IS SLUGGISH, CONSTANTLY HAVE TO REFRESH PAGES, ESPECIALLY YOUR HOME PAGE.
3. VIDEO STREAMING, MUSIC DOWNLOADS GETS HUNG UP OR STOPS.
4. NOW IT DOES NOT WORK PERIOD. WONT CONNECT ANYMORE. IT DID CONNECT TO THE GROUND I SLAMMED IT ON THOUGH.
5. AND AS USUAL YOU HAVE TO PAY (ALOT) FOR LINKSYS TECH SUPPORT, WHICH IRITATES ME. WHY SHOULD WE PAY EXTRA MONEY WHEN THE PRODUCT WONT WORK.

...everything this guy said is pretty much true for me, especially the first one, but not the ground slamming part (although i'm pretty damn close)

i read another review that said something about upgrading firmware...i have no idea what that is, but the reviewer said it solved her problem with her router. i looked on the linksys site and found a "firmware" link for the router i'm using, but i don't kow how to update. it's a ".bin" file...

phukraut 09-28-2005 08:43 PM

Generally, when it comes to firmware updates, you download the file onto your hard drive from the manufacturer's site, and then go into your router webmin, and you then point to the file on your HDD and it should work right then and there. Sometimes you have to restart your router.

"firmware" is the software in the product.
The bin file is the updated software for the device.
On the page providing the update should be instructions on how to install the update.
Note any warnings. Be careful, read the directions fully.
