XP sp2 and msn - deleting my mp3s! help!!
 

tonight,
while i was in msn, my gf sent me a mp3 song.
i got the message: "this file is potentialy harmful to your system..." and i clicked "ok" which was the only option...

and it DELETED THE SONG! i mean not in the folder, not anywhere onthe ssystem. then i found out its a sp2 feature. WTF?!?!?!

anyways, my question is: how do i dissable this horrible feature?!

I hate the security center, I shut it off on most machines pretty much as soon as I get SP2 installed.

In the Control Panel try opening up security center and then clicking the link for Change how Security Center alerts me, uncheck Firewall. Now go back to the Control Panel and open up the Windows Firewall setting and turn the damned thing off, it's about 99.99999999% fucking worthless anyway (as are most software firewalls btw).

If that doesn't fix it your Anti-Virus may have found something in the file that it didn't like :P but I wouldn't imagine Security Center would be the one to flag that.

i'm using MSN7 and servicepack2 on xp pro. and these are simple mp3s. not harmful in any ways!

it must be something on my computer. did anyone ever see this before? overall, i'm running Zonealarm and AVG. would this affect it?

I run xp sp2 and have used msn messanger to send mp3 files. I've never seen such a message.

ya for sure! once i click OK, they dissapear from my computer like they were never there. so everytime, i have to go in my received files, copy and paste the mp3 and then click ok.

and then when i read the help, they say: if a file was blocked, find it and rightclick, click unblock. it's GONE! how can i do that? fucking microsoft!

liquidlight - There are a lot of good software firewalls out there; they give you much better control over outgoing connections then a typical NAT or SPI firewall. I personally use a router with SPI built-in, in addition to a software firewall running on my local machine. The two in combination is pretty much the best protection you can get.

In terms of the Windows firewall, though, it is absolute garbage; it's basically just a packet filter.

Also, this is not an AV issue; AVG and any other anti-virus I've seen have their own alert boxes and don't use XP-style ones.

On to the issue at hand, the problem is definitely to do with the security centre (man, do I hate the Microsoft philosophy of protecting users from themselves...). To disable the alerts (and file blocking), do the following :

Open up the Security Center in your Control Panel.
Click the button under Resources labelled "Change the way Security Center alerts me".
In the Alert Settings box, remove the check marks. I'd say just take them all out, given that you have third party security solutions running.

After that, you should be golden.

I've never heard of malicious content being stored in an mp3 file.. it's just a container file, it can't be used to run code on your system or anything. Then again, Microsoft isn't often logical about these things.. that's why you'll only get me to upgrade to XP when you pry my copy of 2k from my cold, dead hands.

After changing the settings, if it still farks your transfer you might also try having your girlfriend rename the file. Change the extension to .txt. When you get it, just rename the file to mp3.

Despite the message, it isn't Windows, it's MSN. (Shades of AOL?) MSN file transfer protection. In this case better known as another WMA marketing tool.

ya, i looked and since i have a new version, the patches didnt work(probably found an old one. ). i'm not in too much of a hurry to get this but why am I the only one here with this problem? on my other computer, i installed it(msn 7.5--same as this computer) and it didnt do this problem. all my friends with msn dont get this problem. it's FUCKING retarded!

not being able to open the file in MSN is the problem. they have a file transfer in the program and i want to send and receive mp3s. now when i can't do what i want to do, then it fucking pisses me off.

so i try to find the way to get arround this. just like most ppl will look around the room for the remote intead of just pushing the button on the TV. theres a reason we have remotes right? so why use the fucking tv buttons?

It's an MSN problem. Call MSN. Ask them how to work around the problem. If you get their "it's for your safety" line, let them know you're even safer if you stay off-line (as in cancel service). Ask for a supervisor, etc. They may have a solution that's better than changing the file suffix.

What services do they provide? Why are you paying them?

You can probably find a patch for the new version, or at least downgrade to the previous version and patch it, but you'll be forever chasing your tail as they modify their code. Blocking mp3's is a fairly outrageous feature and they need to stop the practice or provide a workaround.

Sounds like you are refering to MSN Messenger 7, because the newest MSN Internet Service is MSN 9. Try using a multiple chat client, maybe it'll work for you. Like Trillian or another program......

oh well I do not pay for this service. It's just msn\hotmail that i use. if they make it a pay only site, i'm gone. i do not want to be part of that shit.
and the more i think about it, the more i want to leave msn. it's fucking retarded. i'll try installing trillian back tonight i guess. i just stoped using it last time because most of the emoicons ppl send me werent in trillian so it's confusing when most ppl use strickly icons.

oh well, i'll come back to this thread if i have more information on the whole situation. :(
