WMV codec problem?
Got a few vids from a site in WMV format. When I try open them with Windows Media Player, it does the whole "Let me get you the appropriate codec thing." A codec downloads, and installs, but the video still doesn't work right.
The video is black, but I get all the audio. Note that every single time I open these files, it fetches that codec again. Any ideas on what steps I should take?

hmm.... try a program called 'gspot', it's supposed to identify the codec used for you.
it can be dled from www.vcdhelp.com

next, head over to www.divx.com and grab those drivers. |

Well . . . firstly, GSpot doesn't do me any good because these are WMV files.
I have the newest DiVX stuff. Also, I have Xvid and ffdshow. With that, my last option would be to upgrade WMP, but I don't want to do this because it contains spyware. Anyway to circumvent WMP spyware?

Okay. I installed the new WMP and found out how to turn off the spyware and all is well!
