Our company just hired an outside sales rep. I need to setup a VPN for him to be able to access our network and our manufacturing system. Does anyone know where I should begin?

I am the IT guy, I've just never had to set one of these up before and I thought someone here might be able to give me a little help while I am doing my own research.

make sure your router support VPN access some of the older ones do not do it out of the box and you'll have to open ports instead of click a button.

what are you using for a router? are you going to have more sales people in the future that are outside of the office? if so, you might look at a pix 501 or similar. let me know how large your company is, how many machines, etc.
where I work, i have a Cisco Integrated Service Router, 3000 series, and a 3005-VPN Concentrator. A little high end for what we use, but I'm very protective of the internal network. As a rule, you want the VPN device at the edge of your network. You do not want a production server acting as a VPN server!!! |
