Firefox Problem

I wanted to test out the 1.5 Beta so I downloaded it and installed it. Everything went fine except the broser crashed a bunch of times, sometimes during loading of a site, and others when the copmuter was stationary.

I uninstalled 1.5 Beta and reinstalled 1.06 and now Firefox won't open. In the task manager, there is a firefox.exe but no browser is open. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled 1.06 and then restarted the computer to no avail.

Any help guys?

There is probably information in your profile that is specific to Fx1.5, and therefore doesn't work on Fx1.0.x. The quickest thing to do would be to create a new profile, and copy back just the parts that you need. Here's a quick graphic for you:

...although I'd recommend reinstalling the extensions from scratch as well.

Do you need help in creating a new profile?

Well, I ended up just starting from scratch. I copied my bookmarks and then reinstalled everything (deleted the Program Files folder and the Profile folder).

Well, yeah, that's the quickest way to create a new profile. You just need to reestablish your cookies, your logins, preferences, extensions, and autocompletes. It won't be too bad... it works now, right?

would it be stupid to ask if you end tasked the firefox.exe in processes and tried opening it again? I normally find when firefox crashes the process doesnt always end and you have to manually do it

Yeah, I did that process a solid 30 times. It didn't take too long, the biggest hassle is reentering all my Adblock/RIP entries.

If you open the Adblock extension, go to Adblock Options, from there you can export and import adblock entries. Certainly easier than doing it all by hand.

I just downloaded an updated filter list and am back up and running ad-free.

My advice - stay away from 1.5 Beta until it is a bit more stable. It crashed on me several times daily, fucked with my extensions, and then ultimately had to "reformat" Firefox.

I use the nightlies, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't prepared for stuff to go wrong. FYI, there will be a 1.5 Beta 2, then a 1.5 Release Candidate, and likely 1.5 RC2, before it goes final.

Seems like as good a place as any to remind people that beta software is just that....BETA. So, feel free to try it out, but know that any number of strange, mysterious, annoying, and potentially disasterous things could happen.
