Video file editing/splitting help

ok, I have 2 video files, one .avi and one .mpeg.
All I want to do is chop them in half, so I'll have 2 .avi's and 2 .mpeg's, each half the size of the original and the 2nd file starting where the 1st one finished.
I've been searching for ages for a (preferably free) program to do this, but can't find one that just does this simple little operation.
Please help me out before I go nuts!

I'm speaking out of my wazoo here, but have you tried Windows Movie Maker?

<a href="http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/">virtualdub</a> is good for avi's without AC3 or ASF inside.

For mpeg files, depending on what's really inside:
<a href="http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Mpg2Cut2">Mpg2cut2</a>. It's free and works great.
<a href="http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=MPEG_Video_Wizard">Womble</a> is very nice. Trialware, but if one time is enough... Otherwise $120 retail. I think they're still giving a $50 discount.

If you need tools to help identify the contents:
<a href="http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/gspot221.exe">gspot</a> the old standard for exposing avi's.
<a href="http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?vtb">KC Video Inspector</a> isn't as direct, but it handles more types including MPEG-2 & QT.

Thanks, I tried all those but none of them could do exactly what I needed.
When I used Womble, it saved both parts as 40gb files!!!

I seem to recall a program called, funny enough, avisplitter. Have you tried this one?

Here's one called avisplit that is free.

Womble has many options. It's likely you exported to workfiles or MPEG-2. Better to avoid that and re-encoding steps (avoid red in the export details window) and clip the raw streams.

Edit: Same goes for virtualdub. It only works on avi files, but does a good job. In the Video menu, direct stream copy instead of any of the processing modes. The difference is big.

It's tough to guide you without knowing the stream types. Did you try gspot or VideoInspector? Can you tell us exactly what's in the files? Video and audio CoDecs, maybe video FPS too. Some tools need extra steps if it's unusual, and there are some weird files floating around.

Thanks guys, AVIsplit did exactly what I needed. Took a while, but it got the job done!
