Cell phone ringtone problems

I have a Motorola V551 (Cingular). I've been trying to make my own MP3 ringtones for my phone but I'm having problems. Everytime I try to load one from my computer to my phone via Bluetooth my phone says "file type not recognized." I know the phone can play MP3s because it came with one already loaded on the phone. I've also bought a ringtone from Cingular that was an MP3 and it plays fine.

I'm guessing for the MP3 to work it needs to be set a certain way. The file I've tried transfering is at 32 kbps and it's under 15 seconds long. The only info the phone will give me about the MP3s that are already on there are their bit rate (32 and 40 kbps), their file size and their length. I've tried transfering those MP3 files to my computer but they are individually locked so they can't be transfered to another device.

Anybody run into this or a similar issue and know what I can do? I've done some searching on the net and found a post on another board asking the same question, but no one had any answers.

What about Xingtone? I've heard a lot of people quite happy with that program, and your phone is listed as supported. $20, but the demo gives you one free upload.

I had the same problem though I wasn't using bluetooth, and my phone is the V3. I had to contact Motorola, and can't remember exactly, step by step what they had me do, but I think it was something simple like making the computer recognize the phone as a modem. After that everything worked fine.

Crazy

I use audacity, it is free and when I export mp3 it imports it into the right format. Otherwise, try remaking the MP3 in itunes or something then it will work, I had similar problems, before audacity.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you can't load using Bluetooth. You have to use the USB/mini USB cable and Motorola Phone Tools.

motorola phone tools all the way - that is the only way to do ringtones. Then, once you have the cable, you can do seem editing a well. Oh, a good place to get the cable is eforcity.com , they are about $15. Try going to this page to find out all you can do to a motorola phone.

I know the title is Motorola Hacker's Bible, but if you scroll down the page, there are chapters about mobilePhone tools and P2K Manager.
