well the harddrive is in a metal casing that is part of the case.. it's the 1st time i see something like that. i can't take it out without taking the whole case apart. so my 2nd choice is to network to do my backup... and now, i can ping from XP to ME but i cannot access the computer. and on the ME computer, i can't ping my XP... neither is blocked by firewall......... FUCK!!!!!!!!

well thanks for the help... my trusty ZONEALARM was blocking it! hahahaha.... i'm an idiot. learn from my mistake ppl!

Most of the drive cases only require removing one screw. Take a good look.

Hey! If you can get the machines close enough to each other, connect the drive to the other machine without removing it.

You might get one of the computers to see the other. That's good enough for what you want.

Install tcp/ip and netB*** (can't remember what it's called) on both machines.
This sometimes helps in your situation. Well, it can help with W98se-XP.
I never tried it with ME. Use same workgroup and user.

Good luck. Don't forget you can use serial ports to transfer or Printer ports.

Aye, I think I know what yer talking about. Is the HDD in sort of a "cage" ? There's a screw holding that cage in though...

Install TCP/IP and NetBIOS? Uhhh, I'd hope TCP/IP would come installed in the first place

well just to let you know, i did manage to setup the network and everything so it's all good... i didnt want to remove the fucking HD because it's a factory made case(compaq) so it's really unremovable unless i remove some of the metal clips... (then it would be broken... )

Yeah I had to upgrade the RAM on a bud's old compaq. I had to remove both sides of the case, then cram my little brother's midget hands into a hole in the back of the mobo tray (which covered the entire side) and find the screw on the backside of the CD drives. Then i spent 30min wedging the screwdriver in there and unscrewing the damn CD drive.

Worst part was the thing had 3 PCI cards and an AGP vid card - couldn't get in that way, and a stupid SEC PII which was fucking crusted on. Oh well, GJ on t3h network, bike riding mexican amigo.
