Bearshare

I just got a new laptop. Dell Inspiron 600m. I connected to the internet with the same router that my old computer still runs on. I downloaded Bearshare and i cant get connected. Ive downloaded Bearshare on the old computer and it started up right away, so the router settings should be fine, right? The windows XP firewall is down. I deactivated the Norton firewall. I cant figure out why its not connecting. The router is a linksys BEFSR41 4 port. Ive tried downloading the newest firmware, but they have a new system where it opens a Word doc and gives instructions to click open Tftp which i cannot find anywhere on my pc. Please help me.

Forward the port/ports that bearshare needs to your laptop's IP address.

If you managed to get it working on your old computer, I assume that you don't need instructions. Just go to your router's configuration page and play around.

I have to make no port forwards in order for bearshare to work. The only "firewall" i have is my BEFW11S4.

Reinstall bearshare and make sure you don't check any settings dealing with "active" connections.

I hope this isn't too much of a threadjack.

I'm running a version of Bearshare that's a year or two old, and it keeps telling me I should upgrade. I can look up the version if anyone's interested.

Does anyone know if there's a good reason to upgrade to the latest version?

Thanks.

No reason at all to upgrade. It's just more ads/spyware...

Thanks. That's what I suspected.

Although I was hoping they had introduced a degree of anonymity.

I'm curious...I was under the impression that Bearshare was spyware.

i have also been undet ythe impression bearshare had a lot of spyware bundled with it. I've always steered clear of it and when i needed to use any similar program (to download a feew music videos every now and then) limewire is what i've used.

Ofcourse limewire has it's own problems. If i remember correctly it is written in java and uses a large amount of resources.

It does, but as far as I can tell the older version I possess does not. The newer versions have tons of it.

I must say that it does heckle me to buy it a lot, and does some sneaky things. When you go to close BearShare, it will randomly alternate different messages in an attempt to keep bearshare running while minimized :)

When both computers are connected to the router, they will have different addresses. Heck, even if you grab the cable from your old machine, some routers will detect that and give you a new addy.

Like others have said: check your port forwarding. Go to your new machine, click Start, Run, and in the box type CMD. At the command prompt, type this:

ipconfig

and take a look at the second line of the output, which is your IP address. Go to your router and add another port forward to your laptop IP.
