laptop problem
Hey guys!
I bought an HP laptop from Best Buy on Nov. 1 of 2004. I received an email today saying my warranty has expired, and asked if I wanted to buy a new on. I thought this was strange because I should have until Nov 1, 2005. I looked into it, and HP's records say it was registered in May of 04. I confirmed the registration date with HP. It looks like they sold me a used laptop. Any advice? or should I just let this go. chance Last edited by chance; 08-07-2005 at 03:54 PM.. |

If they sold you something you didn't ask for, or if they were not clear about what you were buying, or in some way misled you, you should hound them until they correct it. If they do not correct the problem, you ought to report them to your neared better business bureau. In my experience, they will do absolutely nothing at every stage unless you chase them. Good luck.

I called there corporate office and basically the guy was a complete ass. He told me that the email I received from HP, AND the person I talked to didn't exist! He denied any wrong doing and yelled, "IS THAT ALL?." Wow....but what can you expect from a company large enough to send me to a small island and drop genetically altered wild beasts trained to sniff out hungry poor people, who stand up to Best Buy.

Call HP. Offer to send a copy of your receipt. They'll often work with people in weird situations. Definitely get it documented that you have purchase proof that doesn't match what they have on file. If something in the laptop fails before November it'll increase the chance HP will help you.
Best Buy is a nightmare. If the laptop dies and you're facing a big loss take them to small claims court. If nothing fails before November you lucked out. Otherwise the communication with HP will probably be enough that they'll cover it under warranty.

Best Buy is supposed to honor the warranty from the day they sold it to you, new or used. If HP is sending you something, I would actually just disregard it, as you bought it from Best Buy, not HP.
As long as you have your receipt from Best Buy, you should be ok. If you bought it new and it actually was used, I would take it up with one of the store managers and see what they might do for you. Did they give it to you at a reduced price? I worked as a Service Manager for Best Buy for three years and quit just over a year ago, so I know how things work at that company. Go over to the Geek Counter or Customer Service and ask to speak with a manager. Be polite to them and just explain your position. Trust me, with all the shit that goes on in a place like that, all they need is another irate customer. When I worked there, we were more linient to the people that asked for things instead of demanding and also to people who were calm and not rude. Best Buy (and other retailers) have what they call DEVO. Most laptops under the 1yr warranty (from date of purchase on your receipt) will be exchanged for something comparable if they find your unit has a fault. They will give you another laptop, and send the old one back to the mfg. They will take care of anything after that.

Yes they charged me full price. If indeed it is used, that would have taken at least $200 off the price (but I don't even think they sell used items?) That's why I am so upset. I'm going to take it into the store manager and see what the deal is. Thanks for the advice.

They could have had it up on sale as a refurbished item - or an "open box" item but it's odd that this wouldn't be apparent to you. Of course, honestly, I think that someone somewhere is missing something...this is just too odd to be under the listing of Best Buy being dishonest...and yeah, Small Claims court would be a waste of time against Best Buy - but I'm sure the FBI would LOVE to investigate them considering they've been pissing people off a lot over the last few years.
However, I purchased my laptop (and a whole bunch of other items) from Best Buy (HP Pavilion ZT3340US) and I bought the 3 year warranty with it...I registered with HP.com and I received an email saying that I only had a few months left till my warranty expired (the standard 1 yr. warranty). The HP.com site was only following the basic precedure... Sounds like a small error somewhere and someone else being misinformed or perhaps a clerical error...I don't know. Keep this thread updated. I'd love to know the outcome on this one.

Well there is nothing I can do about this unless I just report them to the BBB. No one will talk to me about this issue, so basically I am screwed. I have talked to Best Buy and HP. I did some research and the laptop did come out around the same time that the laptop was first registered. So there is a strong possibility they sold me a used laptop. Another reason that it probably was used is the laptop was not on display anymore, it was in the back. Someone didn't wan't it and returned it or something. Who knows....

Best Buy has a 14 day return policy on all computers, laptops included. They shouldn't sell it to you at a "new" price, because it isn't brand new, sealed in the box. You should have gotten maybe 10% off or so. Also, BBY will sell display items that are getting older at a reduced price as well. They have to get rid of their merchandise some how.
Since its been a while since you purchased the laptop, I doubt they will give you anything off of the original sticker. However, they will still honor the 1yr warranty from when YOU bought it from them.

Yeah Bendsley I finally contacted HP and got my warranty back. Yeah, they should have given it to me at a reduced price, but oh well. It's been a really good laptop, so no complaints in that department. Live and learn.
