files sharing/router/wireless/security
I've done some extensive googling and searching on the tfp but have yet to come up with a guide/how to for this issue.
I have two pc's, both running winxp pro, using a dlink wireless router with wep enabled (no wpa option in the router). And I would like to share hard drives and a printer securely, the one pc is wireless and the other is directly connected to the router. I am not sure if i should be using the simple file sharing option in windows or is there another way i can view hard drives back and forth between pc's that is secure so people on the outside could not see or gain access to the drives. thanks for any help! |

Go ahead and share the drives. The IPs of your computers are non-world routable, so they wouldn't be able to see them. That's the whole idea behind routers and firewalls anyway.
I bet you can just go into explorer and type "\\ip address of machine you want to access\c$ and you would be able to see the default share.

I don't think you'll need to share C: or any other fixed drive you have.
Win sets up these admin shares by default. You just need permission to use them. By that I mean, if you are on a domain it should authenticate you automatically if you are domain admin. In a workgroup, you might have to enter an account name and password if you have different accounts set up on the machines. Don't mess with sharing the root of your C: if you can help it. If someone does get in, it makes it a little easier for them to view your files. |

WillyPete: C$ is a hidden share enabled by default in Windows.

As I said, but I got the impression that you were advocating actively changing the sharing when you said: Quote:
