Floppy drive

I was wondering when was the last time anyone used his/her floppy drive? My current PC has one that I salvaged from 3 or 4 upgrades ago. I don't think I've used it for about 3 or more years now. On my most recent upgrade, MB, CPU, RAM, I just left it unplugged. I doubt I'll need to use it anytime soon or at all.

Anyone out there still finds it useful?

I can't really imagine anyone using them anymore, especially now that USB drives are so cheap. My current PC has no floppy, and I don't think I used the drive in my last one since 2001 or thereabouts.

Somewhere around '99 I think. When the iMac was introduced in mid/late '98 I understood the idea of no more floppies and proceeded to move data that I still used from floppies to CD (luckily I had a CD burner at work at the time... way expensive back in the day). When my iMac arrived in Feb. '99 I never looked back.

I had to update the BIOS a few months ago, so that went on a floppy.

I use mostly my 256MB thumbdrive, crossover cable if the files are large. Current MB bios can be updated right under Windows. Perhaps floppies will finally phase out soon.

I can't remember the last time I used my floppy drive..

However, that didn't stop me from hooking one up in my lastest. I just know that once I decide to go 'floppy-less,' I'm going to need it for something.

I used one last week for a BIOS upgrade. That seems to be the only use for them now a days.

I used mine a few weeks ago to ghost a HD. Maybe I should go floppyless but I'm scared of the change I just know I'll run into software that won't work without it.

Used one today for a BIOS update. That's the only thing I've used it for in forever...

I used a floppy to boot up the NetBSD installer because an old BIOS wouldn't recognize my CD-R for some reason. Floppies are still useful for various boot-type disks, especially for older machines. For everything else, I use UBCD.

I took mine out of my tower a year or two ago to make room for two 60 gig hard drives... i haven't even needed it with webspace and ftp locations.

I don't use it except for the occassional sneakernet application from desktop to old ass laptop with Win3.1 or Win95 and no PCMCIA cardbus slots or USB.

I use it for backup of a few small data files.
Delphi progs and Finale. Also telephone numbers, passwords & URLs
like Yahoo Briefcase. It can keep sensitive data off the machine until I need it.
But really it's for backup.

Also use it to transfer small utils I want to use on another machine that is here for a short time - like to be fixed - if no network is posible.

Yes, but I work at an office that deals with people still using Windows 98...flash drives don't work on Win98 without loading drivers (via floppy) first....

but it's still useful to have....the laptop Im getting doesn't come with one, but I'll probably buy a USB drive for it.
