It took me a second of searching to realize.. how do you intend on getting the mp3s to play, if not on a CD? That's why they're MP3 compatible CD players, so you have a way to play them. If you want your MP3s in your car, I'd get a portable player (iRiver, iPod) and an FM broadcaster -- multiple uses that way.

However, iRiver is coming out with in-Dash players soon enough: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/10/12/2114210

Damn! I think I'll have to get one of those too. I have a Sony Xplod that is mp3 CD compatible, but I still end up running around with a bunch of disks in the console. That'd make things so much easier!
I had to bookmark that page...

WiFi and a hard drive is nice but it's getting pretty serious, and expensive. Been down the carpc road, and it isn't something I'd do for more than one vehicle.

I'd be happy if someone would just make a deck with a USB port. Let us use thumb-drives, or run a cable to a HD. Leave the damn CD's at home.

JVC has dvd headunits that will play mp3s on dvd. Either that or get a radio with an ipod interface and a ipod if you don't already have one.

In-dash CD/MP3/WMA disc players with smart media card. CD8445 and CD8455.
And theres a model in the AVN series that has a built in HD.

And there are several 'off brands' that are marketing in-dash removable HD systems. And I just saw another new brand marketing a unit with a USB port on the front. Once again - they are not name brand units and they are surely not prime manufacturers - so finding info may take some fishing.

Im curious, in newer vehicles with the factory alarm/killswitch design. How do you go about installing your own deck. Im afraid that if i pull out the factory unit that it will disable my truck? If thats the case then where would i go from there?

mostplaces like car toys or bestbuy will install it into your car for free as long as you buy it there. would probably be much easier. or your deck may have a code (my car did) and it will just pop out

Alpine 7894 awesome and powerful deck. It's a damn shame they don't make it anymore. I'd recommend just getting an Ipod or something of that line. I just use my deck to plug in my Ipod now.

If you have a compatible car, you can use this MP3 harddrive in place of a CD changer with a factory head-unit.

I just want a head with a 3.5 mil line-in jack so I can plug my iriver 40gb mp3 player straight in. Right now I use an FM transmitter in one car and a cassette adapter in the other.

Yes. I agree. Why isn't the car mp3 business getting smarter? USB connectivity for HDs would be very nice.
