CrossFire or SLI ?
 

So I have got a new job and a bigger salary :thumbsup:
This means my 4 year old computer can get scrapped and I get to build a new one. So I was just wondering if Crossfire or SLI is the way forward. Which one do you think is the best one to invest in ?

Well, SLI has been out for a while. Crossfire isn't out yet.

I have to wonder if SLI will wind up going the way of the 56k "Shotgun" modem...essentially being surpassed by better technology by the time it is really established.

SLI is here now, crossfire is tomorrow, next week is some new technology. I don't see SLI becoming anything more than a fad. It's been done before and it didn't last, there's no reason why it's gonna last now any better than it did before. As before it'll be all the rage as it is now but SLI will eventually go the way of ISA and soon to be PCI. If your rich enjoy the trend as for me I don't have money to spend on twice as many high-end video cards as I don't even have money for one high-end card.

If I were you, I would purchase a motherboard capable of SLI and an Nvidia 7800GTX graphics card. That card alone is a beast that will power ANYTHING. If you feel the need for more power, you can always buy a second card and connect them.

I'd personally stick with a single card solution. Just get the best single card solution out there (7800GTX). I remember reading benchmarks on Tom's Hardware and Anandtech that had single card solutions beat out SLI. SLI can get a little glitchy too, at certain times you may see the difference between where the two cards render. SLI will also draw alot more power and generate alot more heat for not that great of a performance increase. Another thing is relaibility, I would imagine SLI might have problems since it's more complex then a single card solution. Just make sure you get a good processor, good RAM, a good HDD, and a good single card solution, and you should be fine running all your games on the highest settings.
