There probably isn't really reason to have one. The only way it's going to be beneficial to you in the case that your cable modem goes down, is to dial into a service which you'll have to pay for anyway aside from your cable bill.
I would probably just pass on the modem.

I echo Bendsley, if it comes with it, so be it, but I don't see the need to buy one if you're already with cable. You can easily add one later if the need arises.
