How do I rip music from a DVD to .mp3 format?

I have a live concert DVD (that I bought...no bootleg) that has no companion audio CD available for sale. I was wondering if there was a moderately easy way to rip the tracks from the DVD to put on my iPod?

ratbastid 05-30-2005 04:03 PM

WOW, I really should read the question before answering.

There are apps that route outgoing sound to incoming channels so you can record it. Never done it before, myself, though.

MikeSty 05-30-2005 05:16 PM

... such as adobe audition? Too bad that's a lot of money lewl.

I'm thinking....

jonjon42 05-30-2005 05:21 PM

k this is a bit tricky
I believe dvd decryptor will let pick apart the dvd and rip the AC3 tracks
now what you have to do is reencode those into something easier to deal with.
I suggest foobar200 write to disk (wav) and then encode however you want. (or you can use some other media player that supports AC3)

Recording off the sound card is what I would do. Theres a free to try program made by High Criteria called Total Recorder that is very good for this. It's only 12 dollars to buy.

It lets you record incoming audio as well as outgoing audio. Anything that passes through your sound board, it can record. It's always worked well for me.

go see www.videohelp.com. it will have anything and everything you should need to accomplish your task.

DVDDecrypter is good for ripping but for conversion you want BeSweet. Direct conversion from VOB AC3 streams to mp3. Can be slightly tricky since its normal use is via command line, but pick up BeLight for a good graphical front end.

Download them here:
BeSweet 1.4
BeLight
vobinput.dll (so BeSweet can access the VOB files directly)

Unzip BeSweet to its own folder. Unzip BeLight and VOBInput into BeSweet's folder. Run BeLight and make your choices.

Depending on the DVD layout and VOB's you may want to extract specific AC3 streams first. Open DVDDecrypter. Switch to IFO mode. Stream Processing tab, enable stream processing. Select the audio AC3 stream you want. If there are several you may have to play them to find the right one.

If you have questions I'm sure a number of us here can help.

(adding a post here so that I don't miss any updates to this thread, as I have a DVD of Schoolhouse Rock that needs to be iPodded as well)

I have Audio Hijack Pro by Rogue Amoeba (which is a great name for a software company!), which will snag any sound (I use it to record Real Audio streams for NPR shows). I was hoping for something a little more automatic, but I might have to resort to that.

jonjon42 05-31-2005 08:32 AM

for conversion after ripping with dvd decryptor, just use foobar2000 (it will play AC3)
and tell it to write to disk, it'll write nice little wavs where you can use your favorite encoder to do the rest of the dirty work. (and of course tag them)

jonjon, do you know of a Foobar2k VOB plugin? Unless you have one then foobar needs help with both input and output. BeSweet reads VOBs and encodes to mp3 with LAME (excellent speed & quality). Fewer steps and no intermediate files.

espi 05-31-2005 10:49 AM

I second the DVDDecryptor > BeSweet conversion. I've done it before using the Dave Matthews Band Listener Supported DVD. Even with a GUI for BeSweet, it's pretty complex. I think I needed two or three tries before I got it to work. (In the end, the sound was still kinda low, but I think I could have fixed that in the conversion process).

The forums at DVDDecryptor are a pretty good starting place, as are the guides at Doom9.net.

I wish I had a good step-by-step guide for you, but I didn't have enough foresight to actually document the process as I did it.

The easiest way is to see if there's a recording program bundled with your sound card that allows you to record whatever sound your computer is putting out. I then put the DVD in my DVD-ROM, play it, hit record, and it creates a .wav file from the sound (I've done this with all sorts of stuff, including Stevie Ray Vaughn live at Montreux). I then convert the .wav into mp3 and voila. As long as you remember to stop at the right spots, it shouldn't be too hard. :)

cyrnel 05-31-2005 11:06 AM

espi, my first BeSweet experience was through BeSweetGUI. Elegant is not the word I'd choose. :) BeLight is much better.

fallsauce 05-31-2005 07:12 PM

do you mean something like... DVD Audio Extractor?

thencrow 05-31-2005 08:30 PM

Fallsauce, you are a godsend! that program rocks.

Redlemon 06-01-2005 05:56 AM

Wow, that looks amazing. Can you vouch for its quality?

cyrnel 06-01-2005 08:57 AM

Good catch, fallsauce. 30 day free trial!

anleja 06-14-2005 10:28 AM

fallsauce, this is just what I was looking for.

I know, ancient thread, but it just dawned on me there's another free solution.

AutoGordianKnot (AutoGK) is a DVD->XviD (or DivX) solution. It compresses DVD's to much smaller avi's. Part of the process includes converting the original DVD audio (mpa, ac3, or dts) to mp3 before stuffing it into the final avi file. Let it work until it's finished with the sound and slam, bam. Simpler than BeSweet by several steps since it knows how to follow DVD video arrangements.

1. Point AGK at your ripped DVD.
2. Point AGK at a destination folder.
3. Select the audio track (there may be several).
4. Set the mp3 type (cbr/vbr), rate, and let it go.

It'll analyze, normalize, amplify, and convert the audio. When finished it'll switch to processing video. You'll see a message like "Running compressibility test...". At that point abort and look in the agk_temp folder where you'll find both mp3 and wav versions of your DVD track.

Can't believe how many times I've converted DVD's with this program and still always pointed people to 500-step tools... (sigh) FWIW.

SiN 09-12-2005 04:33 AM

heh, i too dig the AutoGK.

I've never ripped music using it, but it's good to know that it's possible, if I ever need to :)

I used this one a couple weeks ago (to create oggs, not mp3s), and it worked like a charm. Highly recommended.

You want an inexpensive and easy way to rip the audio from the DVD just use. OpD2d do a search on Google read then download. You will have to download the MP3 converter somewhere else, but the website tells you just where to get it. This program records any sound going to your sound card. It works great. I've ripped songs off my Eric Clapton Croosroads DVD. You can choose high bit rates too. Total cost $FREE just some time.

Wingless 09-17-2005 09:54 AM

I'm checking out that OPD2D right now... its a 500kb file that apparentally takes anything off the soundcard and saves it to disk... i'll let you all know how it works out....

silvertiger 09-17-2005 03:56 PM

The only way I have ever converted Music from a DVD is to use Winamp to play it and change the output in Winamp to be direct to disk as an MP3 (This works even though it's a DVD Video). Then i used SoundForge to crop out the pieces I didnt want and re-save as an MP3.

was simple enough for me and it worked really well. CD Quality, and exactly what i wanted

strangely enough I had done this for my daughter as the CD version of Lindsay lohan's "dont move on" song from the movie "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" only contained a portion then switched to something else mid stream. My daughter wanted the whole thing. so .. i improvised and got it directly from the DVD, entire clip :)

Redlemon 09-19-2005 08:00 AM

I got one for the Mac now... MacTheRipper, freeware. The original website has been removed from the web, but is still available at the above VersionTracker website. It can do full DVD unprotection rips, but what I'm using it for is to get individual audio tracks from individual chapters. A bit tedious, but hey, it is free. Right now I have a bunch of .AC3 files, which play in VLC player, so I'll just have to figure out how to move them over to an iPod-useful format, next time I have a moment.

labob 09-20-2005 09:24 AM

I haven't seen anyone mention DVD Audio Ripper

From their site... "DVD Audio Ripper is a software DVD movie soundtrack ripper which can rip DVD audio to mp3 or wav.
You can use DVD Audio Ripper to extract DVD audio and rip DVD movie soundtrack to mp3 and convert DVD to wav with complete sound effects."

I used it a while back to rip the audio off the Cure's concert DVD "Trilogy" & it sounds excellent on my 'Pod.

Wingless 09-20-2005 10:09 AM

I tried DVD Audio Ripper and had no success with it whatsoever, but it could be just me.
