I want to be able to leave my computer on while I'm downloading big files when I'm away, and I've got a program where the mouse will jump every few seconds so that it's not idle. But apparently that doesn't work and although the little computers in the taskbar is still there, it's not actually connected.

Is there anyway around this problem?

have you set your connection to stay connected?

like click on the connection (if unconnected), Properties > Options
then you can set redial attempts and specify not to drop the line if idle.

It's set to 'never', but data's not coming through.

A workaround is to get a download manager, like Flashget. If the file server supports resume then you can pick up where the connection was lost without having to re-download the whole thing again.

Are you using a built in modem or a modem card? Update the driver if you can. You might want to check with your ISP and tell them about the dropping connection.

I'm downloading some stuff on p2p so I want to leave the computer on while I was away or asleep, but right now that doesn't seem to work.

Or if someone can suggest a program that makes the computer think the mouse is moving, (I tried mouse move, but that doesn't work, the computer still goes to standby) that'd solve the problem.

More likely than your computer being "idle" you're getting dropped on the ISP side for lack of traffic, since your computer still has the connection status.

You may also be "flooding" out the connection, have you checked for updated drivers for your modem?

some providers actually disconnect connection after idle for 20-30 minutes (AOL, etc.) It doesn't matter if you are d/l'ing stuff or not, it checks http traffic.

Can you find a program that changes your current webpage like every 5-10 minutes? That would be my suggestion.

Good idea d4in, I set up two webpages that would automatically redirect to each other. Which, fingers crossed, would work like a dream.

Haha you're not from New Zealand are you? I had a guy ring up with this exact problem today (I work for an ISP). However we don't have any kind of idle timeout in place on the server and according to the logs it was connected the whole time. My answer is: NFI, but I would like to know the answer for future reference! hehe

Heh, I am in NZ, actually. However, I'm not a guy and I didn't ring up. But actually, it seems to be okay now. What ISP do you work for? (I'm using slingshot, $15, so I can't complain.)
