Computer Log - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

My computer occasioanlly freezes (no blue screen with a hex dump, it just freezes) and i don't know what the problem is; it generally appears to be random. Anyway, i was wondering if there is a programe which can help log general computer activities and the like such that i may be able to determine the cause of the problem.
I've got windows XP and have looked through the event viewer although it is not much help; it seems to be a little cryptic as well. Is there anyway of logging a computers general activities or perhaps some other way i could try to converge on the problem?

EventID.net is a good resource to frequent when trying to decipher the windows event viewer.
