Voice data modems?
I'm trying utilize the telephone function in my (Windows XP - home) address book. I want to make calls over the phone lines, not internet calls, using my pc speakers & a microphone. I have an Emachines T2865.
I've been told by Emachines that I don't have a voice modem, when I asked if they had a voice/data modem or if I can get an after market one they say I don't know! I've seen many internal and external voice/fax modems but don't know exactly if these will achieve what I want. I like USB external idea, if that would work. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Voice/fax modems are fairly standard, though with your eMachine you've probably got a Lucent chipset softmodem which is WORTHLESS.
For somewhere in the range of $50 you should be able to pickup an external USB modem, if you spend a little more you'll get better hardware with additional software, personally I still recommend the USRobotics gear but it's comparatively spendy. The modems should be available at all your local retailers, but CompUSA probably has one of the best selections. Avoid the words Winmodem if you can, that means that the controllers are all software based and can complicate what you're trying to do, especially on an eMachine (bad blood, don't ask). But for what it sounds like you want to do any decent modem that says Voice/Fax should do just fine with the appropriate application to drive it.

USB modems often have terrible problems as compared to internal hardware modems.
You'll need a hardware based modem (So no winmodems or onboard modems) Take a look at Diamond brands. They make a great modem HERE (Via tigerdirect) and have a rep for producing good hardware the just works.
