WinAMP being slow

For some reason or another, WinAMP takes forever to load up. I have a fairly fast computer (3.2GHz P4, 1 GB ram) and all other programs load normally and quickly. However, whenever I double click a song to paly, it takes 20-30 seconds before WinAMP loads up. Anyone know the possible reason for this?

Do you have the same slow behavior if you launch the program directly? As in if you go through the Start menu and just open WinAmp? Also does it load slowly with other types of media, or just MP3?

I would guess that you've either got a damaged file in the WinAmp install, like one of the cookie playlists, or that the file association has become damaged in some way.

I dunno what happened, I reinstalled it and it worked fine. Weird.

WinAmp uses some "temporary" files to save things like your last playlist, which track you were on, pre-amp and equalizer level, etc. If one of the files that contains that information were to become corrupt then it would have to try to read it for a certain time or number of attempts before failing over to default settings, that's most likely where the delay came from.

is it winamp 3, notorious for its slow loading, winamp 2 or 5 is much better.

what is winamp?

Winamp is a program used to play audio files, and just recently in their new version, video files as well.

I had the version 5 that was causing the trouble, I reinstalled it and it worked fine, weird shit like that happens.

I use winamp because it is faster for the most part. Another reason is that it is much smaller on screen and fits nicely in the upper right corner of my monitor. It seems like Media Player is just too big. The skin I use also pops up what song is playing at the beggining of each song in a small transleucent box in the lower right corner, which I have grown accustom to.

WMPlayer 10 now rips MP3s, much easier to use I think.

Hadn't heard that about 3. Opens within 10 seconds for me and is pretty much fault-free. I dumped 5 as it seemed somewhat flaky. Perhaps it is the machine or the overall software on the HD?

I found Winamp3 to be really buggy and slow on all of the systems in my house (3 systems). Winamp 5, however, runs flawlessly :)
