Windows on a non-master hard drive?
Im trying to set up a Linux (Ubuntu) dual boot for my system. I have a secondary hard drive to install Linux on. My plan is to install Ubuntu on the secondary disk, which will be set as master. I will use GRUB to select Ubuntu or XP, with XP residing on the second disk, which is now slave on IDE0. Im wondering if Windows will play nice like this, booting and running as the slave drive.
Any ideas/suggestions?

If you configure LILO correctly then there should be no problem.
http://www.control-escape.com/linux/lilo-cfg.html I've done the dual-boot thing a couple of times but each time I went back to WindowsXP only. Just that the Win based software titles are much easier to find and use. |

sailor: yeah, no problem there. make sure you have windows installed first, and then install linux so the boot loader (GRUB in your case) will catch that you are wanting to dual boot. but really, you shouldn't have any problems with XP on a second disc and linux on another. i've dual-booted many times with linux and a windows version of some sort on a separate disk.
sashime76: did you read his post? he is going to use GRUB. also, he said he is using Ubuntu, which uses GRUB by default. read the posting before replying to the posting.

You might find it easier to do it the other way round. The WinXP bootloader doesn't like being loaded by something else (though it's conceivable someone has fixed grub/lilo). When I had this setup I had to put the WinXP bootloader onto the MBR of the primary disk, and configure it to load GRUB rather than the other way round.
