Not a gamer, but I have recently picked up a logitech MX300. I love it.

There's really no excuse for not going optical nowadays, the tracking has improved dramatically since 1st generation, and best of all, you never have to clean them. Not to mention you can blind people with the light =)

Optical. Enough said. Debate over.

I went the same way. It's amazing how much of a difference it makes. I previously had the original optical explorer, but I found that if I was sitting still long enough, the mouse would spin down. It needed to reinitialize (no more than a half second), but it made for quite a few missed sniping opporunities in it's time. No problems so far with the Trackball explorer.

Of course, Optical...and get USB OR ELSE! The refresh rates for USB vs. PS/2 are totally different. USB refresh rates for a mouse are (i think) ten times higher or something. This takes better advantage of the optical refresh rates....better mousing!
