Has MSN finally outdone Yahoo???

Forgive me if I haven't placed this where it should be...If it should be moved, by all means, please do.

MSN has finally created, and made available (non-beta) for free, their MSN Messenger (version 7.0) and WOW!! It's improved.

I'm personally a Yahoo user, as Yahoo's emoticons are better and the features are more my style...but now, some people's love for Yahoo may be in jeopardy...

MSN 7.0 allows you to create a MSN Space (better than any "normal" profile) and the design, features, etc...seem pretty sweet...

As it is, finally, MSN has improved their messenger in ways that Yahoo has not. It hasn't outdone Yahoo or any other, but it has taken quite a step forward.

What is everyone's opinion on this? For those of you who use MSN Messenger, what do you like about the new messenger? What do you not like about it? What should be different?

All the extra features are fine and dandy. But after about 20 minutes it just get's lame and probably only appeals to the 14yr old AOL'er. I have been running the beta version of MSN7.0 since late last year, and there is nothing that really makes me go...ohhhh!

Sure the nudges and winks are interesting, but at the end of the day all I want a chat tool to do is send text messages.

I'm a good 'ole AIM user. DeadAIM and all of the third-party messenger programs have little bugs that get on my nerves. I'd use MSN if anyone else I knew used it. Unless you can use it to talk to people on AIM? Then I might try it. Sort of like Eyeball Chat.

I like the older MSN simply because it does the job for me. I don't need to fluffy up chatting with my friends and family.

Now, excuse me, I gotta puff my nose

I haven't used it, but it seems MS drops eye candy onto their apps as if to say "see, we've improved it!" Sorry, but making it look cute like a Mac or Linux doesn't make it work any better.

I use a multiplatform IM client (Fire on Mac, Trillian on Windows) and it be honest, I think the lack of a common protocol is the real issue with IM. Frankly, not everyone wants to have an account on every system out there.

I'm not a fan of most of the native clients simply because of the bugs and overhead that they've got (I swear to God if I could find the person resposible for linking AIM and ICQ to Viewpoint I'd maim them). I've recently started running Gaim in lieu of the native clients but I do keep them around to support features like webcams.

Haven't tried it, but I never liked MSN because you couldn't:

1) buzz a friend
2) leave off line messages without having to send an email.

Plus, Yahoo's cam functions were better, bigger.

Does MSN 7.0 improve in these areas? i could care less about emoticons.

Good points. In my opinion, I still like Yahoo more, but MSN's Messenger has improved I must admit. I understand that most people don't care about emoticons and crap like that but there are [b]other[/i] as I posted in my original posting. Thanks a lot for reading the original post and replying to it!

Hey, is anyone else having upload/download problems via MSN 7?

It seems that MSN is deciding what to block, and what not to. I've checked all the options, but can't find anything that would explain this.

Are you talking about downloading the messenger itself or downloading files from other people while on the messenger?

I had this problem as well... and it infuriated me to no end

and when I tried to leave a comment, their help page was down.

I also don't like how you can't right click to see the email address now, you need to hover... I can't waste those precious seconds!

I overall don't like the improvement, I wanna go back to 6.2

I used the new MSN beta for a time and thought it was cool. I thought the way you can write the messages with your mouse, and that was cool til it looked like a 1 year old with a crayon scribbled on my message box. I primarily use Gaim as I can use it on both Linux and Windows.

hmmm.. what is skype? i obviously don't know enough about msn cam/chat. With yahoo, it was so easy, big cam pics, voice chat at the same time, buzzing, off line messages, games.

Like i said, i tried msn, but the cam pic is so small, it's almost not worth it. The other thing was, whenI registered, I was forced to get a hotmail address, inorder to have a passport id. It just seemed that YM was more intuitive, and faster to set up too.

www.skype.com . It's a voice chat program. Up here, the BEST long distance plan I can get effectively means still paying 40cents a minute to call my wife, and more for friends. It's telephone quality, easy as heck to set up, and easier to use.

I've almost replaced my phone with it, to be honest.

And on MSN, if you clicky the little arrow under the cam pic, you can get it a good size. I find it still streams WAY better than Yahoo, which gives poor FPS even on supermode.

I realized that they were two different messengers, my question was simply whether or not they were able to communicate between each other.

Communicate between eachother? You mean can you see who's on AOL when you're signed into MSN messenger? Not that I've ever seen...as far as I know, MSN messenger never could. However, you can with Trillian, though. Trillian shows you (and logs you into) AIM, Yahoo and MSN...an all-in-one messenger...but you don't get the "frills" such as seeing the avatar/picture that you show when just using each messenger by itself.

The older version of MSN Messenger definitely allowed this. So does Eyeball Chat. I asked above if it worked with the new version but no one has responded yet!

Janey, in your options/settings you can make the cam pic big like Yahoo's...I've known people to use their AOL and Yahoo email addy's for MSN addresses on their and have had no problems.

Well, MSN 7.0 did just come out...give people time to check it out.

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but I've never had MSN show me who's on my AIM or Yahoo and be able to talk with them all on MSN Messenger...if it did it wouldn't just be MSN...who knows...

MSN always annoyed the hell out of me. Only time I ever used it was when I had to talk euro gamers and stuff. I rarely use(d) it.

I like to avoid native clients because they give spyware and crap (stupid viewpoint), but the big issue I have with third-party l33t programs like trill is the major incompatability and lack of features. I suppose it's great if you JUST want to talk with people cross-client, but for pictures it's a pain in the ass. I used trillian for a year before I realized the only people I talked to on MSN were available on AIM.

I gotta say that AIM has like quadrupled in annoyance. Now they're putting ads in every place they can and it's annoying as ... RHEEEEEE!

I was an old school msn user, but I just got an sbcglobal account. I liked the msn browser, but the Yahoo one just kicks tail. The newer msn messengers have been just trash. I refuse to update them. I just boot up trillian. I really like yahoo.

I would say that msn has not outdone yahoo.

You know how MSN got so big, don't you?

It was bundled with Windows XP (Well, "Windows Messenger"). Oh, and the forced Windows XP Passport upon first bootup-after-install helped Microsoft gain marketshare, too.

Personally I wish everyone would just accept the fact that ICQ had all the nice features before everyone else did, shut up already and some how would start to interoperate with all the other IM protocols out there.

Or everyone should just start using Jabber. Either is fine with me. =)

I say stop using bloated IM programs, personally and use third party clients such as Miranda IM.
