OOoooh yeah ladies! Here comes Tiger!
Apple has finally announced the release date of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger! It pounces (sorry, I had to) onto shelves on April 29th! I can't wait. I'm gonna make a trek downtown to the Apple Store this weekend and preorder that baby!

So many insults to choose from. . . I'll be good, what new "features" are they packaging with Tiger? And have they come up with any games for these things yet?

Got the email from Apple today. I'm very excited about this myself. I'll exercise my student discount and get it at UIC's computer store on release day. Yum yum.
P.S. Does anyone know if Apple bought out Konfabulator to create this Dashboard thing or is it just the same basic idea? I'm assuming they bought the rights since they're calling the things widgits but I was curious...

I wonder if they're gonna make a big fuss and give out a bunch of free shit with it? I remember back in the day when XP was released, everyone was giving insane deals on other products if you bought them with XP.

Apparently the primary requirement to owning a computer is playing games on it. I didn't get that memo. You can get many of the new games for the Mac, although I doubt Windows people really follow the news. Interestingly, a recent poll on MacRumors about Mac gaming indicated only 14% of people play games on their Macs. Probably because they have better things to do with their time.

A note for students interested in getting Tiger (like me): Apple is offering Tiger for $69 to students!! Thats awesome and makes it even more attractive. I would gladly shell out the $129 for Tiger, but this helps a broke-as-hell college student just a little bit more.

Well even though no one responded I ran out downtown to the apple store anyway. Waited in line for 1.5 hours to get in, only to get myself a copy and wait in another long line at the registers, and then finally to be told my student discount was no good on software in store and I had to buy it online. Boy is that a disappointment. Espcially since I've bought ipods and other harware there with my discount. I wonder why no software in the retail stores? Guess I'll have to wait.

Lets not forget.
Apple Computer has been slapped with a lawsuit by Tiger Direct Inc. for allegedly infringing its trademark with the new Mac OS X "Tiger'' operating system scheduled for release on Friday. Code:

I've been using it on a single proc. G4 and a dual proc. G4 for about a week and a half. It sure was a pain in the ass getting it to authenticate through Active Directory and then having to edit the registry on the F&P server to show the home directory on the apple machine.
Grrr. I worked on this all day and have it mostly figured out. Tiger seems to be pretty smooth. The Dashboard looks like it was completely stolen from Konfabulator. Also, TigerDirect is suing Apple over the name Tiger as TigerDirect owns the trademark for it. I guess we'll see what happens there. I liked playing with Tiger for the past several days. As I am not a "mac" person, because I usually use Linux on x86 processors, I would recommend it to someone else for sure. The downside to me sayying that is that I haven't played with the older Mac software (10.x +). I did however put in to get me a dual G5 machine up at work for me to play with. Something like $4600 or so, so I hope I'm not dissappointed. I doubt I will be.

Yeah... same damn thing happened to me. I just got my laptop a week or so ago and I got a paper with it for the Up-to-date program where I get Tiger for $10. When I bought the laptop I was told to just come back into the store and pick up a copy when it came out or to mail it in with a cashiers check, etc. Well, I went today and waited in line ( for 2 damn hours ) to find out that Ill need to send it in to be able to get it for $10. Looks like Ill be running it sometime by next week.. maybe.. |

It's pretty frustrating eh? I totally had my hopes up standing out in line in downtown Chicago with a friend waiting for the damn store to let us in, only to be shot down at the register. Talk about anti-climactic, and I was already having a bad day . Anywho, my university computer store usually stocks some copies at the discounted rate + a $3 stocking or somesuch fee, so I'm going to give them a shot Monday morning before my first final. That'll be just what I need during finals week...not a distraction at all...heh.

Took the plunge...back on a Mac for the first time in 4 years.
Decided to pass up on the Mini, so got a $300 G4/400 Sawtooth on eBay and upgraded it to 640MB RAM, added a Radeon 9000 Pro videocard, an 80GB HD, and a 2-button mouse...runs great. Added a Linksys router, and networked to my XP box. (Still confused as to why there are 3 Library folders, 3 different font folders, etc...) Last edited by powerclown; 05-14-2005 at 07:00 PM.. |

Be careful if anyone uses cisco vpn software on their current mac and then upgrades to Tiger. The two don't work together. So if you have a Mac laptop you use for traveling and connecting back to your office via cisco vpn, you might want to wait a couple weeks before updating. Cisco says they'll have a fix by then. I ran into this today when a very high up guy at my work decided to update his home computer and now he can't access the network on weekends.
Here's an article about it: Cisco Reports VPN Conflict with Tiger

The quality of macs (perhaps it's all computers but it's really obvious with macintosh, as they used to have a much higher standard) has really been going down. I know a lot of people who have had problems with the mini's, and as far as gamers go, I think that might be most people I know who game bought a PC for gaming
That has to do partially with limited releases on macintosh platform, and partially to do with (mac users hate it when I say this) poorer hardware. |

That couldn't be farther from the truth. Take a look at a G5 and you'll change your tune. I changed mine. I was an absolute dyed in the wool PC guy before I took a trip to an Apple Store. Its just an all around better platform. (I'll fight anyone to the death on this) Apple's attention to details is second to none. They pay attention to the little things while not losing focus of the big picture. Take a typical LCD panel and try to angle it just how you want it. More often than not, it ends up pretty close one way or the other to where you want it. Apple paid attention to this and their flat panels move smoothly and stop exactly where you want it to. Apple is not going downhill at all. Their business is booming and they currently hold their largest market share ever at 3.6%. The iPod shuffle just took a 58% market share in the flash based digital audio player market (a market they just broke into a few months ago with the introduction of the iPod shuffle) Tiger is the most significant update to OS X since its release. Apple has again succeeded in making the OS work faster on the same hardware. Apple has given us a plethora of updates and fucntionality enhancements that makes operation easier and more efficient. Microsoft had really better reconsider removing the WinFS file system from Longhorn because it doesn't seem to have much to offer without it. The new Start Menu alone is a clusterfuck from hell.

Windows Longhorn Build 5048 really isn't all that bad. I'm not arguing for Windows, because I only run Windows on one machine for work. But. the start menu hasn't changed that I have noticed, except the graphics.

This doesn't mean squat re. gaming on the Mac platform but it certainly raises awareness of the PowerPC platform and undoubtedly some people will want to learn more about Macs. It may also encourage developers to port games from Xbox 360 to the Mac. We'll see.

Funny how just about all of those "features" are things that any Mac user would consider to be useless. Apple should stick to their main selling point by constructing computers that can't do anything besides run Photoshop and call it "user-friendly."
P.S. This just reminds me; I was in the Apple store on 3rd St. Promenade a couple days ago, and was greatly amused to see games as old as Halo being marketed for the Mac.

Technology outdated PCs? or do you mean technology outdated operating systems? The hardware isn't that much different. There are 64-bit processors for the PC platform.
I use linux as my OS of choice, which I think is highly more configurable than the OS X software. Actually though, I did just order a dual 2.7GHz machine for work. I think the first order of business will be to get OS X off and install Yellow Dog Linux.
