Sounds like your BIOS glitched on the card assignment, pop open the box and relocate the card to another PCI slot on the board, should force a resource reassignment and fix you right up.

Thanks liquid! I wasn't expecting a reply before I went off to class. I'll have to try it out when I get back.

I switched slots and the bastard still isn't working.
Could you reveal those tricks you've got stashed? I'd be more than thankful!

Need to know a little bit more about the computer, i.e. is it a Pheonix or and Award BIOS and do you see the card identified on the initial bootup screen that provides the BIOS identified hardware?
For the record I hate MSI boards and I'm hoping that your soundcard isn't just toasted. Things to look for in the BIOS. .. somewhere under the PNP settings the option for PNP OS should be set to NO!!!! This is very important, if you're curious I can give you the long winded reason why later. Also look for a setting that says Reset configuration data, or Update ECSD or a combination of the two and try changing it to Yes. It'll revert to No after a reboot so don't stress over it. Also, if you moved the card down in the slots you may want to try moving it up, or swapping it for a card that's currently working, just as a troubleshooting step.

and no more 5 minute responses for a while, I've got to head out, but I'll check the threads before I crash tonight and see if we can't followup. . . Good luck!

Went to the BIOS screen and frustratingly enough couldn't find options forPNP OS, Reset Configuration Data or Update ECSD.
I moved it a slot up from where I had it before and still no luck. Let me change it out again and swap it with another card. The card right above it is my video card and it is working just fine. I'll write down the MSI stuff here when I reboot and edit it in here. Edit: Boot up screen just gives me this jolly little MSI logo "Link to the Future" and goes right into the windows xp boot. Also swapped out my ethernet port for the soundcard and still no dice. Ahhhh Windows wants me to reregister now due to too many hardware changes! And the internet function doesnt work...

Update: I ran the Creative Diagnostics software that comes on the install CD and I get this:
Hardware Detection: Pass Wave Driver: Fail MIDI Driver: Fail Mixer Driver: Fail DirectSound 3D Driver: Fail Mixer Settings Check: Fail After going to the Creative support website it links me to and downloading the drivers it still doesn't work! Alright, after an entire morning (since 9) of searching around and reinstalling software and checking motherboard stuff I finally found the answer in a thread at www.annoyances.org. The problem stemmed from some registry value that got changed to where I has Read Only status, pretty dumb. But it's fixed now! Thanks liquid!
