PC Doesn't Recognize PSP

When I plug in my PSP my computer recognizes it as a PSP but it says I lack the proper driver in order to use it. I called up Sony customer service and they said I need to download USB 2.0. I downloaded several versions of the program and none of them installed properly except for one and even then it was to no effect.

I'm running an ancient Gateway with win 98SE as the OS. Under Device Manager all of my USB Controllers lack the word "enhanced".

I browsed the other threads on USB 2.0 but couldn't find the answers I was looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it's an "Ancient" computer, chances are your motherboard does not support usb 2.0. I'm not sure if its required to have 2.0, but I'm sure if you check the instruction manual it will probably say so somewhere in the specs. From the very brief google search I did, I read that you need to switch the PSP to USB mode. Did you do that? Try that after plugging it in, and see if you can see it in your devices.

When I plug in the PSP and put it in USB mode it's recognized in Device Manager as a PSP Type-A but it prompts me to install the drivers neccesary to use it. I can't find the booklet with my system specs but I'd imagine my motherboard not having USB 2.0 ports. What I don't understand is how the PSP is recognized in the first place if that's the problem.

I've searched for drivers to install for the PSP online and found nothing but 1000+ sites on Driver the game. I've attemped to install the PSP with several drivers that are already on my system and nothing worked.

I haven't a clue what the problem is and when I talk to Gateway Customer Service they tell me to call Sony Customer Service and Sony sends me back to Gateway.....

Again, any help is appreciated.

Isn't PSP supposed to be Plug and Play?

spived2 03-31-2005 11:39 PM

I'm pretty sure it is plug and play, it works just like a regular memory stick. You should be able to go to your devices, see a device named PSP Type A with three folders in it. However, I've also seen nothing but USB 2.0 in the specs so that is probably your problem.

Like most removable storage drives (flash drives and such), the PSP doesn't work with Win98 w/o a driver for the drive. The PSP doesn't come with a driver, so until it does, it can't be hooked up to your computer.

You could try finding a card reader that reads Memory Stick Duos and tranferring the data that way.

Thanks for all the help.
