Corrupt Icons in Win2k - TweakUI is only a temporary fix..
ughg, so my icons are constantly screwed up. if I rebuild them using tweak UI, they are temporarily repaired, but then sure enough, they are whacked out again when I'm looking for files in my computer. I have been repairing them 4-6 times a day lately
anyone know of a different way to repair/rebuild icons in win2k aside from tweakUI? thanks in advance!

yes. I'm confident it's not a spyware/virus issue.

What exactly are the icons doing? The only thing I can think of off the top of my head would be to go Control Panel>Display>Settings and check the color quality setting and see if somehow it was set to a low color setting, instead of a higher color setting.

the icons change after I close all windows explorer windows.
here's an example....the window as it appears opening my computer fresh: after rebuilding the icons in tweakUI: the icons will stay good, as long as I keep open at least one windows explorer. if I close them all out and then open up windows explorer or my computer, they're hosed again. if the icons were just looking shabby, I might think it could be the color depth, but windows is instead using icons from different executables or dll's. that's what makes this problem so F'in weird! heh

Does this happen to all users? (have you tried setting up and logging in as another user?)
Assuming it's just the one login that has problems, have you tried safe booting and deleting your iconcache? Safe boot, delete file, restart. Located: C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db Could be wrong but I recall tweakui's rebuild can leave remnants of problems. Might be enough just to safeboot and do a tweakui rebuild. Would have to know and research the user interface goodies you're running. |

haven't tried setting up a new user......good idea, and last resort.
I'm not running any interface goodies.....I will give both your iconcache and safe mode rebuild idea's a shot. thanks!!

yeah, it's C:\WINNT\ShellIconCache (no extension)
never did this one before, I can research, but if you know offhand.....and it might be a silly question - but the file will be recreated when I reboot, right? hehe, thanks.
