Where do you keep **your** task bar?
Where do you guys keep your task bar? and Why?
Usually on the bottom and un-hidden. I use my system clock and icons regularly as I like to keep my desktop free of a lot of icons.

On windows I keep it at the bottom - Small size and as little in the tray as possible
On *nix it depends on the WM but I tend to go for an OSX look and with that comes a bar at the top

Windows ME: Keep it at the bottom.
I would like to "Auto-hide" it, but then when I get IMs and such via Trillian I don't see the windows flash. That + the fact that I disable sounds in messaging programs makes it tough to have auto-hide enabled.

On the bottom, unhidden, very much the same as Crimson. I like to have quick access to Firewall w/out getting out of the browser. I also like being able to see what progs I have running.
At work loads of people have it on the side, that totally throws me. Funny how you get used to one thing and a change screws with your brain.

Auto-hid at the bottom, but I usually use my ObjectBar bars I made on the left and right of the screen. Go to the Screenshots thread to see what I'm talking about.

Win XP, on the bottom, unhidden
I used to hide it when I had a 15" monitor. But since I upgraded to a 20" a while back I haven't felt the need for the extra real estate on my desktop.

I must be the different one, the taskbar is at the top of my screen, unhidden. I just find it more natural to pull down through menus than push up.

My main one's at the top, then I have a second one at the bottom. And a big ol' sidebar. It's weird, I used to be all about uncluttered desktops... but I love having everything this way. Guess I've gone over to the dark side No icons on the desktop, though. I hate icons. Look at the desktop screenshot thread.

Currently its on the left, was on the right but I had a particularly good desktop pic that I didn't feel like photochopping to get it to look good with my bar on the right.
I don't see how you guys can take it on the bottom, if you open more than say 5 windows you can't even tell what they are anymore. With it on the side I can get 18+ windows open and still be able to click the one I want when its time to change. |

taskbar, what taskbar?
Seriously, at home the closest thing I have to a taskbar is on the right of my screen, just above gkrellm. I also have quick launchers, date/time, and a single-line command prompt box at the top of the screen. At work, task last on the far left of the far left monitor (the 17"). The two 19 inchers are blank and reserved for actualy work |

In Windows, bottom, unhidden. In Linux, bottom, centered, and somewhat in the style of an OS X Dock.

WinXP Pro -- I use GeoShell, no taskbar.
Linux -- I'm promiscuous with wm's, but I don't use the ones that have taskbars (GNOME and KDE can lick me). Taskbars are inefficient.

At work on Win2k - on the top and unhidden on the left monitor. I love the way it fucks up anybody that sits down at my worstation. That Windows apps *still* aren't smart enough to not bury their title bar under it is kind of sad but I deal with it.
At home, on OS X, I keep the dock on the left side of the left monitor. |

Taskbar
I find it annoying that the taskbar is mandatory.
So I make it auto disappear and then I shrink it down so that even when it pops up I don't see it. And then I set up WinKey to make all my apps available via key combinations. When I really need to access the start menu, I can get it via the windows key. I've no icons on the desktop either - for a while I had a screen capture of Yet Another Windows Crash set as my desktop. Can you guess that I use Windows grudgingly? |
