Where do you keep **your** task bar?
Where do you guys keep your task bar? and Why?
Usually on the bottom and un-hidden. I use my system clock and icons regularly as I like to keep my desktop free of a lot of icons. |
XP: I auto-hide mine at the bottom. I have no icons on my desktop :)
There's a thread in this forum where you can post your desktop. Check it out there.. |
On windows I keep it at the bottom - Small size and as little in the tray as possible
On *nix it depends on the WM but I tend to go for an OSX look and with that comes a bar at the top |
Windows ME: Keep it at the bottom.
I would like to "Auto-hide" it, but then when I get IMs and such via Trillian I don't see the windows flash. That + the fact that I disable sounds in messaging programs makes it tough to have auto-hide enabled. :( |
On the bottom, unhidden, very much the same as Crimson. I like to have quick access to Firewall w/out getting out of the browser. I also like being able to see what progs I have running.
At work loads of people have it on the side, that totally throws me. Funny how you get used to one thing and a change screws with your brain. |
I like to keep it on the bottom and unhidden for the clock just like you marco. The other reason is that I have tried moving it elsewhere and I just couldn't work with it like that.
Auto-hid at the bottom, but I usually use my ObjectBar bars I made on the left and right of the screen. Go to the Screenshots thread to see what I'm talking about.
Win XP : auto hide at the bottom, I have all my quick links auto hidden on the top or the right, also auto hidden.
well, I dont have a task bar per-se, but my dock is happily un-hidden on the right side of the screen.
I can not deal with a hiding task bar. That thing is my bitch, and it stays on the bottom of the page.
On the bottom in plain view
LiteStep....no taskbar
I keep my dock in the top right. This keeps my mouse at the top of the screen for everything and dont' have to go up and down all the time.
I haven't hid my taskbar since I had a 15" monitor. It annoys :).
bottom unhidden, but usually have the systray reduced (using xp customizations)
Win XP, on the bottom, unhidden
I used to hide it when I had a 15" monitor. But since I upgraded to a 20" a while back I haven't felt the need for the extra real estate on my desktop. |
At home I have it un hidden at the bottom and at school for my windows 2000 server I have it on the right side hidden (annoys the teacher)
XP got it on the bottom, double thick, pluss the address bar, not hidden. Then, on the top, i have another double thick links bar that is auto hidden.
Win XP Pro on the bottom of the screen, unhidden.
What Jets said. I keep a clean desktop, even after the tittyboard.
I leave mine on the bottom, unhidden, and dragged up so there are two rows instead of one and locked in place with the quick launch tool bar in place.
I must be the different one, the taskbar is at the top of my screen, unhidden. I just find it more natural to pull down through menus than push up.
My main one's at the top, then I have a second one at the bottom. And a big ol' sidebar. It's weird, I used to be all about uncluttered desktops... but I love having everything this way. Guess I've gone over to the dark side  No icons on the desktop, though. I hate icons. Look at the desktop screenshot thread.
I can never get used to it anywhere except the bottom. Unhidden and with the quick launch on. XP platform.
Currently its on the left, was on the right but I had a particularly good desktop pic that I didn't feel like photochopping to get it to look good with my bar on the right.
I don't see how you guys can take it on the bottom, if you open more than say 5 windows you can't even tell what they are anymore. With it on the side I can get 18+ windows open and still be able to click the one I want when its time to change. |
Right Side, takeing up half the screen.
i've got mine on the bottom, quicklaunch on the left, and doubled in size.
i can't go back to the single height. i've tried, but i can't handle it. i need the space :) |
taskbar, what taskbar?
Seriously, at home the closest thing I have to a taskbar is on the right of my screen, just above gkrellm. I also have quick launchers, date/time, and a single-line command prompt box at the top of the screen. At work, task last on the far left of the far left monitor (the 17"). The two 19 inchers are blank and reserved for actualy work :) |
In Windows, bottom, unhidden. In Linux, bottom, centered, and somewhat in the style of an OS X Dock.
Bottom and unhidden. Plenty of real-estate so don't have to worry.
i like having it at the bottom and unhidden w/ full access to all the stuff i use in the tray, although, i hide alot of stuff in the tray w/ xp WOo
Auto hide at the bottom. Since I run IRC all the time, it's not usually hidden since I have IRC messages waiting in the chat room.
Win XP : Unhidden on the bottom of the screen, until tomorrow when I just might change it.
We'll see. |
hidden on the left side of the screen... i can hold more programs and stuff in less space...
Like so..... Me Loves Sarah, and hates auto hide.... :)

WinXP Pro -- I use GeoShell, no taskbar.
Linux -- I'm promiscuous with wm's, but I don't use the ones that have taskbars (GNOME and KDE can lick me). Taskbars are inefficient. |
top
At work on Win2k - on the top and unhidden on the left monitor. I love the way it fucks up anybody that sits down at my worstation. That Windows apps *still* aren't smart enough to not bury their title bar under it is kind of sad but I deal with it.
At home, on OS X, I keep the dock on the left side of the left monitor. |
Taskbar
I find it annoying that the taskbar is mandatory.
So I make it auto disappear and then I shrink it down so that even when it pops up I don't see it. And then I set up WinKey to make all my apps available via key combinations. When I really need to access the start menu, I can get it via the windows key. I've no icons on the desktop either - for a while I had a screen capture of Yet Another Windows Crash set as my desktop. Can you guess that I use Windows grudgingly? |
in plain view at the bottom plus I make it 2 layer high so I can put lots of quicklinks there and the minimized programs won't squeeze together
