Help my computer keeps crashing all the fucking time!!! - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Pentium 4 1.6
512 mb RAM
60 GB HDD (divided in 20 GB and 40 GB)
Windows 98 SE
Geforce 4 MX 420

It all started some days ago when norton 2000 started to crash almost every single time I tried to run it, so I decided to unistall it, but the norton unistall file got overwrited by the netscape unistall file (same name for both files, both files located at c:\windows), therefore I couldn't unistall norton

So i manually deleted norton and installed norton 2001, and thats when all the crashing began, after that my programs keep on crashing all the time, especially netscape, explorer, iexplorer, and Diablo II, I unistalled norton but things still crash....

So I decided to reinstall WIN 98 without formating, and still the same crashs are there....

the reason why i don't want to format is because I have about 20 GB of ROMs, warez, mp3s, and porn, and I don't fell like burning over 20 cds...

So anyway I talked with some guy who told me I should try to boot my comp on MS-DOS, deltree the windows folder and reinstall windows 98, but if i do that is there any change I will lose some of the stuff on my HDD? do you guys think this will solve my problem?

I would suggest finding an old 20-30gig hard drive and transferring your files over to it, then start from scratch on your main drive. That how I backup before a reformat. It takes some time, but its a hell of a lot easier than burning to cd.

don't have any spare 20-30gib HDD, my only spare HDD has 3 GB

i do plan on burning all my porn someday however I need to organise it first and that would take quite a long time since I have so much porn.....

I don't really mind when the Netscape, kazaa, winamp, explorer crash, I could live with that, however it really pisses me off when I'm playing Diablo II and it crashs, and the new patch is more likely to be released next week andI need my computer working by then!!!

Herm... make shoure you restart in between a uninstall and a reinstall i know that shound lame but i have been runnign 98 sence 98

and i KNOW if you dont do that exxpecialy with big proggrams it can caouse hella problems

I reckon back up and format is the way to go...well thats what im doing in three or so days :\

That's why I don't use Norton anymore, It's crap. I now use PC-cillin, never had any problems with It.

I personally, will never again use any software made by Norton, AOL or Stardock.

perhaps as nomad said, remove norton...and install some other antivirus...i use AVG ( its free ) http://www.grisoft.com/ and see how it goes from there.

however, my personal experience with win98 is that it ran alright, if you only wanted a main process or two...but it generally needin rebuilding every few months. so perhaps you should look at getting a second harddrive, and then you can store your much needed porn...etc there...whilst yuo do your rebuild. you will also be in a good position to rebuild in the future. good luck dude

I already use AVG anti-virus, but I like norton because of the utilities such as speed disk and system check up.

i already unistalled norton and my computer still crashs....

also I should add that when it crashs i get one of those annoying windows pop up messages closing the program

well i solved the problem already, it was actually my video card driver that i installed without unistalling the old driver that was making my computer crash, now everything is back to normal

For future reference, you don't have to deltree the windows directory, just rename it and then install windows into an empty Windows folder. That wy you can find your old .ini files and such.

also youve got a powerful enough system to run windows xp... its more stable then win98se...
