Google Maps

I searched the forums in case someone had posted this, but nothing relevant came up.

Google has recently released a beta version of their new website, Google Maps. This functions like Mapquest or Mappoint... only better. Drop shadows, click and drag maps and using actual directions like:

"[my_postal_code] to Toronto" actually work. You can even click on locations and have the map center itself. Very swanky. Google has user interface and user experience down to a "T".

It obviously makes use of the latest browser technology, so make sure you're up to date.

Here's hoping that they can bring out an international version soon. God knows I'll be more than likely to "misplace" my map in no time.

Now if Google could combine this new Maps service with their mobile phone service...

Wow! Just tried it and I like it. Very easy to use. Usually, mapquest doesn't find the address I'm looking for anyway or it's outdated. I like the interface also.

It is very slick, but (at this point) I can't find a way to get turn-by-turn maps on the printout. I'm not dragging my computer into my car in order to have directions with me.

Let me start off this response with some background.

I read a lot of maps. Why? I don't know, it's just a dorky thing I do. In fact, one of the many nicknames that my friends have for me is 'Mapquest'. They can call me if they're stuck in traffic anywhere and I can probably give them the best alternate route. But I digress....

The panning functionality of Google Maps is exactly what I thought the other services lacked. It's smooth and quick, almost instantaneous. I have found the address locator very accurate, as opposed to the other services which are usually off by a block or two. You can enter rough descriptions into the search fields and it knows what you're after. The only real criticism I have is that the freeway interchanges don't seem as clear and concise as mapquest.

This is definitely my new favorite mapping research site, I just hope my friends don't start calling me 'Google'

I love how you don't have to reload the page to move around the map. Just drag and the map loads the new area. Very quickly too!

I'm hoping that they integrate this technology with their aerial photos, which they purchased a couple of months ago, as well as with topographic maps. That would simply be amazing.

Have you heard of Keyhole? Probably the greatest program I have ever downloaded... its what Google purshased a couple months ago. Check it out at www.keyhole.com try the demo, but be warned you will become hooked. It has all you described, satellite photos... topographic maps, etc. etc. Give me a location and ill post an example.
