I am also in the market for the same: not plasma or LCD; 34-40 inches; same price range.
Also, not "HDTV Ready" true HDTV.

I would recommend sticking with a tv that doesn't have the HD receiver inside. I'm a big fan of keeping my components seperate, that way if something goes wrong with the receiver, you can replace just that and not the whole TV. Plus if you are going with digital cable, the price of the receiver usually is figured in with your cable bill.

For that price range you can go to Sams or Costco and get a very nice HDTV rear lcd projection that is 65 inches. Of course these dont come with a over the air reciever but really only the high end units do. Most people have a HDTV cable box or a HDTV sat reciever.

I have a Toshiba 53H81 or something like that. Rear projection, HD Ready tv. It rocks. I agree with Locke7 above with the keeping components separate. Any provider, cable/dish can easily provide you with hardware that receives the HD signal, and if your TV is HD ready, it can easily interpret it.
If you get HD, stay away from VOOM, piece of shit so I've heard. You might look at epinions.com for what other people say about the product you are looking at.
