Home Security System

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I think so..

Has anyone used any of the major home security systems for both installation and service? If so, how was your service? We are looking at having a security system for our new home, and was hoping some of the fine people on TFP have used them.

Thanks!

We used Br**ks before...expensive even with the "free system" package. The system consisted one keypad, two motion detectors and four window/door sensors, some window decals and one yard sign. Suggested retail @ over$300. We signed up during a promotion so the installation was also free. Our home was pre-wired for the system but it still took the installer over 4 hours to locate the wires and complete the installation. The “free” package came with a 3 year contract at $30something dollars per month.

3 yrs x 12 mon. x $30 = $1080 is not exactly cheap, well, but it helps protect the family you said. One of the window sensor malfunctioned one time and I called the customer service right away, it was about 8 o’clock in the evening. I was told that a service technician would be available at 7 am the next morning.

I questioned the dispatcher why a technician couldn’t be sent immediately? I was told that only in an “emergency” situation that a technician would be sent immediately. I then asked what situation would qualify as emergency and the dispatcher told me when the main console had malfunctioned.

You may be lead to think that you would be protected 24/7 but that’s not the case. We got a break when we sold the house and the buyer agreed to assumed the remaining contract terms.

Right now we use a wireless alarm system I have installed myself. Two keypads, three motion sensor and four window/door sensors plus and a keychain remote added up to about $300. There are local companies that offer monitoring service if you choose to have it. Our system can be set up to dial 911, office phone/cell phone should the system detect a security breach.

It also helps to have nice neighbors and a police that lives at the end of our street.

Thanks for the reply! I was beginning to think I wasn't going to get one. Very good advice. We still have not decided on what to do yet, but you bring up some very good points.. Thanks!
