Linux software routing
 

Does anyone here have any experiance with Linux routing? The reason I ask this is that I want to use an old comp (P166) as a server but it would also have to route my network trafic from 2 pcs to (and from) the cable modem.

I thought it would be as easy as installing WinRoute (or a similar program) for windows, but I didn't find anything like it for Linux. Does anyone know if it even exists? Or how I could rig Linux (right now I'm using SlackWare 9.0, but I'm thinking of switching to RedHat) myself?

I use Debian; I have dual p2 server that works quite well , but it's the only other box on the system, so routing isn't a problem (yet). I'm told that Debian is the most configureable OS for networking out side the BSD's; it might be worth a look.

It's called iptables. You just need to set it up. It's quite robust, in fact we use it at work (I work for an ISP). Try http://easyfwgen.morizot.net/ to make a custom configuration script. If you're feeling adventurous, try the wondershaper, too. http://lartc.org/wondershaper/

i personally have a p166 running "ipcop" which basically is a very minimal linux router. i believe the iso you download is something like 30MB in size. It works fine for me, easy installation. Doesnt really require you to know linux.

There are tons of stand alone linux router distros, try google :)
