Visual Studio .NET on Win ME??

Alright, I have a good friend who is a CS major. He runs exclusively Linux but is at home for the summer where his parents have Windows ME.

Anyway, he wants to use Visual Studio .NET to make tutorials for SDL for people programming with SDL on Windows. He wants to use it to take good screenshots for them, etc. Problem is he's not sure if VS.NET can be run on Windows ME. He bought it legit for $10 and tried to install it and it's not installing. It says Win 95,98, and ME are not supported. Thing is he would certainly rather not install Windows on his computer and he can't just up and uninstall ME and install XP on his parent's computer. Any thoughts?

I believe you can develop applications that will run on ME, but you'll have to run VS .NET on Windows 2000 Pro or higher.

This isn't his computer, as I said. It's not an option unfortunately.

That seems sort of silly since he has the .NET runtime installed on ME. You'd think there'd be a way to get it to run. :/

Actaully not silly at all. The .Net framework requires an active compiler and parser service running at all times, as well as active debugging availible from the OS. NT has always had these and 2000 marks their entrance into consumer grade machines. The .Net runtime can be used in conjunction with aspx for developing web-based programs and scripts, but not C++ without Visual studio, which can't find the services in ME.

Perhaps you can Dual boot the machine into 2000 formated with fat32 (so me can see and write it) and boot strap it to start ME unless f8 is pressed, invoking the boot menu. That would make the issue transparent to the parents.
