Setting up Azureus to get past College firewall
 

So I'm going to school at Michigan Tech and I'm not sure how, but the people who control the internet service have the ports that azureus uses blocked because of that whole 'filesharing' thing going on that they don't like.

I'm not trying to download copyrighted files. I want to download Naruto -- and unlicensed tv show that is released on the internet for free. They don't seem to understand this or want to cooperate. If anyone knows how to fix this little situation so that i can change the ports and get past their crap it would be greatly appreciated.

i don't know about how to fix it... but writing to your school and some complaints sound like they should do fine ;)


what all do they block out?

Call someone in charge and talk to them about it. Don't try to get around the firewall, they will most likely figure out what you are doing and you will get in trouble for it. Restricted internet is better than no internet, eh?

If you live in the dorms, look for the guy who doesn't go to class and sits in front of his computer all day. Every dorm has at least one. He'll probably know what to do.

you can set the ports that azureus uses, 80 will not be blocked, you can go through that, but azureus needs 1 port per torrent that is open (or so i recall)

No, I'm pretty sure that Az only uses one port. Regular Bittorrent uses one port per torrent.

you can change the port az uses...something like 6990 should not be blocked..

tools--->options--->connection--->incoming tcp listen port...

the configuration wizard will let you test ports before changing them

Problem is, you can't control what port people you're downloading from are using, plus, many universities are now firewalls and packet shapers that do layer 7 packet inspection (they look at the actual data to determine what protocol that packet is), which makes them pretty much impossible to fool. The admins will laugh at you if you try to get around it by switching ports.

You can try using an SSH Tunnel if you or a friend has an SSH server on the outside. Instant messengers are blocked here at work, so I use this and my server to get around it. All the traffic is encrypted, so they won't be able to see what it is.
